Why do people start a new thread but the OP never posts anything again?

One of the great mysteries of the internet. Someone posts "Hey what about such and such?" and 20 posts follow. As time go ones they have less and less relevance to the first post. I find myself wondering if the original poster is even noticing the replies. If they are not engaging other than just the first post what is the whole point of the exercise?

Some people simply want to start the conversation. They don't care what happens later on in the thread. Some seek self-approval. They don't look for a discussion; they seek an answer that will reinforce their opinion. Some don't care and simply ignore off-topic replies.

Why would anyone need to engage the replies? In many cases, the replies are not the answer the OP looks for, either intentionally or unintentionally, so why engage the trolls or assist in derailing your own thread?

Take Ai-chan for example, Ai-chan rarely reply to the threads Ai-chan started except where a response is absolutely necessary, such as when people ask questions and Ai-chan answered. Ai-chan does not have time to reply to every single comment, especially if the comments are not relevant or lacked relevance to the topic. It's interesting to read the differing views, but that's just it, there is no reward for being an active participant.

In some cases, the view differs from Ai-chan's views. In that case, sometimes Ai-chan takes the stance of "That's interesting, but let's agree to disagree" and chose not to reply. In some cases, Ai-chan disagreed with the view and then decided to give a counter-opinion. And at that point, Ai-chan would decide to be the better girl by leaving that one opinion and then walk away, instead of continuing and risk the discussion becoming a shitfest.

You know, some people just can't accept that they could be wrong and if you disagree with their views than you're automatically wrong in their eyes. Ai-chan has long left that childish notion behind. If you think you can't be wrong, that's fine, Ai-chan will just leave you to your delusions. If you harass Ai-chan, well, you get banned. Simple.

In my experience, I don't respond because I don't need to. I see and read their suggestions, but I don't respond because I don't have questions to ask. The only time I respond is when someone asks a question or accidentally messes up an aspect of my question.

Some OPs use their thread as survey replacement. They want to see more posts regarding the topic, but it's always stop at the 'see', not 'respond'.

Because I am in the middle of no less that three 16 hour shifts in a row. I'll get to any replies when I got time. Typing on a phone sucks.

It just seems a bit rude to throw something out there and leave it hanging in the air weather or not their reply was received. Maybe it is just too much for someone to throw out a "Thank you for your thoughts" here and there idk. It seems weird to me.
