I got this thing a while ago, and I think I'm supposed to put everything in a pot of water and boil it, but how long should I cook it? Is there a specific order I need to add things to the pot? Should I pre-soak some of the ingredients and discard the water I used to soak them?

The general rule of the thumb is put dried fruits first, leafy greens last. Usually you'd soak dried fruits first before putting into the boiling water. But if the instructions say to just put everything into the boiling water, it probably means it doesn't need to be pre-soaked.

As for discarding the water used to soak them, it depends on what chemicals are used to preserve them. Ai-chan would normally just throw away the water used to soak preserved foodstuff.

Ai-chan's basic rule on soaking food is: If it's fresh, keep the water. If it's preserved, throw away the water. Exception is when marinating meat and poultry, where Ai-chan just throw away the marinate after it's done.

seems self explanatory just from the picture. Boil it, maybe put the ingredients to take the longest to cook in first for a few minutes and then the other stuff. Like how most soups work.

Will, this is a dessert, but if its dried ingredients its basically the same rule, just gotta rehydrate them. Might not even need to boil anything in this case since it looks like just some fruits and leaves and nuts.

EDIT Wait now hold up, are those fucking carrots? in a dessert?

no, those are goji berries, just very inflated due to being soaked/simmered in water

Thanks! That helps a lot :)

local asia market
Yes, but I got this particular treat online. In a physical store, I probably would have put it back on the shelf after looking at both sides of the package and not finding any directions.

No, there are no carrots in there, but haven't you ever heard of carrot cake?

But carrot cake is tasty…
yeah, because the carrots add nothing flavor-wise and are only added so it can be CALLED carrot cake as an old marketing trick and to give it a slight bit of color. You can literally substitute it for most other root vegetable and have it taste the same since they're rather neutral in flavor so the sugar and vanilla drown it out
never had baked carrots with butter, brown sugar & cinnamon? They taste pretty good, similar to a sweet potato
if i was going to so that, i'd just use a sweet potato or yams. As is the proper recipe. I almost never use carrots for anything but soups or stir fries. Desserts? nah man. I get it, they have a fairly neutral flavor so you can do basically anything with it. Its like rice. You can give it whatever flavors you want. But i just dont use or buy carrots often and i hated them as a kid so they can be used in a dinner but not a dessert. Its a personal thing, really, but i stand by my opinion.

The way some of those ingredients expanded was truly impressive. I had to switch to bigger bowls for soaking. The final result seems like a natural, more exciting version of gelatin desserts. I like the various textures in there. I think it's well worth a repeat.
