(What do you define as an anti-hero, by the way?

One of the reasons people like Anti-Heroes is because they can feel more relatable than a true paragon Hero.

Another may be that they are just a new and different thing from the typical fairytale heroes kids grow up with. It can make them feel more 'Mature' since they don't show up in kids stories as much. A bit silly, but still a reason.

Sometimes it's fun to let loose and wreck some stuff, and the traditional hero might not be able to do that without raising some eyebrows.

Lastly, are you saying and seeing the term Anti-Hero, when what you're actually looking at is an Anti-Villain? Because that happens a LOT.)

Very simple reason. It's easier to relate to someone that is motivated by saving their own skin than for some sense of altruism. The Anti-Hero looks out for himself and sometimes does the morally correct thing in the process. Very few people (IMO) can say they'd behave good all the time. We do what we have to, to survive.

Offtopic : Sad that death note got a crap ending, and worse of all, author+artists did a sequel oneshot. But guess what. "They did it again" meme. The worse is that the MC was not evil and not even anti-hero but just sold the death-note to gov but DEUX-EX MACHINA that the TOP-DEATHGOD coincidentally wrote a new rule that "You can't sell the deathnote or you die" => *pop* MC die in the train station with the bag of money where he planned everything safely and could get safe retired life.

Writing an orthodox altruistic hero MC is not quite as flexible as writing anti-hero. It's not like they love the concept of 'anti-hero', in fact what they want is just a better basis which has more potential to expand. For altruistic hero MC, only people who like altuistic hero MC and who don't mind would read that kind of story. But for anti-hero MC, authors can create many different personalities and motives yet they all still conform inside 'anti-hero' umbrella.
