Do readers use the glossary for your story?

I'm wondering what the author experience is with the glossary function here. Do you find that the readers to use and engage with it? (In other words, is it worth the effort?)

I have a semi-conlang in my work which probably should have a glossary to go with it, but I'm wondering if I should create one here locally or if I should just make a wiki or something external to link to.

I'd be interested in what other writers do/have done and whether it works/worked well or not.

Thanks! =)

Realistically, probably not.

I had a reader or two like it though.

Personally, it's a matter of self-satisfaction, filling it out and getting the "feel" for the series I want for myself.

Thanks for your responses! I'm sort of leaning toward having an external site or wiki with all the info atm. It's good to know how others are using the feature.

I have never seen anyone use it

I've used it a few times before as a reader, but most people don't even bother to check if a story has one(me included), and it's only after it's pointed out by the author that anyone looks at it. And then most people just aren't interested in it anyway. I personally like them.

I have seen so few authors use it, that I don't even bother checking if the story has one most of the time.

If it isn't too much work, you could do both! :blob_cookie:

Well, it looks like the glossary requires individual entries copied into or typed into boxes. I feel like this is a lot of work, so now I'm leaning toward creating one entry with a link to an external site or wiki. That way I could have maps and other lore items all in one place. Thinking hard on it now, lol.
Thanks for your input! =)

(My thanks to everyone who responded as well! This is all very good to know.)

For one story, I use the glossary feature for my characters' pictures, which I drew. Helps keep them fresh in my mind when I'm writing. I'll add more when the drawing bug strikes me.

I used it before for one of my novels (Royal Four-Ces), because since it has a card game element to it ?? I thought the rules of the game would work better in the Glossary, rather than a colossal info dump in the story ??

I have no clue if a single reader has interacted with the Glossary, but to me it was worth it and I wish more sites had a similar feature ?

Now there's a novel use for a glossary! Thanks for the input! :s_smile:

I don't know actually. I've written a short bio of what my main characters look like there.

As a reader I never check out on my own whether or not there's a glossary, so even if I want to check out something there, I don't & I use the search function.
As an author, I made one and mentioned it in the synopsis section so that readers are aware. Sadly there's no way for me to know if anyone goes there.

When reading, I'll often at least check for one since a few stories I follow utilize it for character pictures and biographies. (It may be because I'm an author on here that I tend to look, though.) It helps me with large casts or detailed worldbuilding.

From an author's side of things, I really enjoy having one for the sake of organization, and I think readers started checking a little more once I put a notice about it in my synopsis and at the bottom of some of the chapters. I use it for character biographies/pictures, shorthand character lists, and a list to explain the tags/content warnings so that it doesn't clog up my chapters or summary.
