I have been writing on my story for quite a while now in private, always intending to share it someday. However, right now I feel torn between uploading and keeping it, because on one hand I really want feedback on it, on the other hand, I am worried that it might not be good enough.

If you intend to publish it then I would find some beta readers and get their input. Maybe find a friend who is good at editing so you don't have to pay money. If you don't intend to publish it but still want input then I would say to post it and see what kind of responses you get. If it's bad then just go back to the drawing board and see what needs to change.

Post it, and then run away for a month. If nobody says anything, that means either nobody reads it or it's not as bad as your worries are. If someone say something, take a deep breath, click it and see what that person says. Take a deep breath, release. If at any point your cheeks feel hot, stop reading. In many cases, the comment is not actually dissing you, but you feel defensive when the comment specifies what's wrong with your stuff.

Don't get angry, yet. Unless they're clearly insulting you. But even so, sometimes it's just how they say it that comes off as insulting, but their criticisms are actually valid.

Don't need to draw attention and ask for feedback if you can't handle it. But if you do ask for feedback, be prepared for those douchebags who just want to bring you down. There are people like that, but here in SH, they're kind of drowned out by those who do want to help you out.

It's nothing to fear. No matter what to you it may not be good enough but if you ever want to get better you're going to need to post it to give advice. I actually help fellow writers so if there is anything you are having troubles on or are confused about message me and I will be happy to help! (that goes for any fellow writers)
So don't worry. There are at least going to be a few readers who are going to love your book!

I actually asked people around me if they would be okay with reading over my writing. But although they said "yes" at the beginning nothing ever came back. This is one of the reasons I am so worried because English is not my native language so I think, some checks would be necessary.

Don't be too worried about it. In my experience, the readers on SH are generally pretty generous when it comes to writing. Plenty of authors don't have English as their native language and still do fine. Even the ones where you can tell that the English is questionable, people will normally give them a pass. Only when the writing borders incomprehensible does it get bad. If you feel nervous still, I recommend using something like Grammarly to help tidy up your writing.

And if reading dozens of reviews has taught me anything, people here are more concerned with what the story is like compared to the English. I've read works that I have to genuinely slow down to decipher but the reviews are decent because "despite the English needing much improving, it appeals to my power fantasy is a good story."

Just do it, let your story do the talk. Like everything else in the world, you can't improve without knowing your mistake.

When I first posted my story on WebNovel and here, I don't really care whether people might come to dislike it since English also wasn't my first language. There were so many mistakes, even now I hadn't changed much.

I wrote my first story out of spite that there's nothing to read(there are many but I'm just lazy to search). I wasn't expecting it to go well since I used a lot of cliche and shit. But it did, I still don't know what kind of magic or trickery I used back then since I wasn't able to produce the same result.

But thanks to the reader's comments, I learned some of my mistakes and was able to fix them. I think.

Well, what I'm saying is, if you wanted to, just post it. There wasn't anything to be scared of, unless you are posting on Royalroad. Those people are brutal.

Scribblehub and Webnovel are good places to post a story if u don't want to be roasted, I would avoid RoyalRoad if you have a fragile ego, they are brutal over there. Good luck!

Scribblehub is a great first site to publish your first work. Take it from me, I‘ve been on wattpad for years but that site is NOT good for beginner writers. This one is. You get a nice amount of views (usually) and the readers are pretty nice with the likes and sometimes comments. I hope it goes well, post more on the forum if you have any other questions!

This is the internet (unless you use your real name). No one knows who you are. If people trash your story, then you can just rewrite it and come back under a different name and pretend nothing happened. If you want feedback and to improve, you need to get it out there.

Prepare for the worst. It would be too much to simply say, “Don’t care about bad criticism.” Of course, you’d care. It’s impossible not to. But, over time, you’ll learn to become tolerant of it and recognize good critics and feedback.

Just do it, man. There’s nothing to lose.

When I posted the first chapter of my story here, I had no idea what I was doing. All I did was just have fun writing and then post it here. I kept on for a while, and just that alone had helped me improve my writing by a lot—to the point that no amount of theory-studying sessions and practicing can compare.

Just do it. It‘s really that simple.

If you never share, you may never get feedback for it, so you'll never know if its good or needs serious improvement.
As far as one knows, there's no really visible "good enough" line. You'll either get the feel where you can stop, drop it, or just keep improving it.

If you plan to traditionally publish a story one day then, maybe not post the whole story on the web. If you plan to just publish on web for free and for fun hobby, then go for it.
