for me it's how a word sounds first and foremost, and then how and where it's used. this is where written works diverge from spoken language to an extent due to emotion, inflection etc., but whatever.

ate vs devoured
walk vs lope
red vs crimson
reach vs grasp

Some words are stronger, some more sibilant, some both. Some words are blunt but strong, others blunt and meek. And words can compliment each other, something that becomes more important in poetry than prose: Eater of planets vs. Devourer of worlds. Reaching for wealth vs. grasping at riches. thick forest vs verdant jungle.

That's deep :blob_hmm: .... But hey, who would not want an explanation from a more detailed resource. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

When writing on a keyboard you should use enough force to break it!
if you can still write afterwards: too much oomph!
If it breaks while writing: too little oomph!

Jokes aside I don't think there's some clear cut formula. The context and the intonation play a role too.
You used giant as an example, but I'd say ginormous or humongous have more oomph in a conversation. And GO doesn't seem very important till you are at the starting line of a 100m sprint waiting for someone to say this word.
