Too much candy rots the teeth and too much xianxia rots the brain.
If you are going to make your world into a hypercompetitive and cutthroat, don't make even the ferryman/ taxi driver/ every stranger you meet outside your house a fuckwit robber.
That is not making the world look evil, that's just makes it petty and dumb.
I understand the importance of strife in novels, because without them, the story has no tension. That is why we have petty nobles, shitty guild receptionists and thugs called adventurers, but every single one of them seems to lack something like common sense and survival instinct. This is actually explainable when most of their victims are not important enough to cause a problem to them, so they continue on. Which must have been a shocker to them when MC comes in to rock their shit. You can have successes in your life, you can have near misses but all it takes is that one fuckup and you can go meet your ancestors. How lucky/ naive one must be to continue on with crime?
I am not saying that to write the world until like rainbows and sunshine, you can make a world gritty with tough enemies. Throwing in bandits, con artists and problematic higher ups are okay, throwing in suicidal bandits, short sighted conmen and problematic higher ups who don't know when to fold are just retarded.
