Does this weapon design sound bad to anyone?

It's an 8 foot long (2.4 meter) spear-like weapon but with a thick wooden scimitar-like blade on one end. The wooden blade is coated in the strongest metal that can be found (tungsten) and sharpened on both sides of the blade. On the other end of the staff is a spiked metal counterweight that makes the weapon perfectly balanced in the center of the staff. It is usually used for cavalry attacks but is handy for ground combat as well. I think that this would be a hard weapon to master and that it would be fairly effective but I wanted a second opinion.

The blade is basically a sharpened club. I can see your point though. Either I should try making it all metal and have the character using it be super buff or have it be a single battle use where if it breaks they can use the spiked counterweight as a morning star.

Make it more like a poleaxe, with lines of metal as reinforcement of a wooden shaft?

Yeah, that's why I wanted to have it layered over wood. Thus, making it lighter. However, it would still be heavy. Which is why it needs the counterweight. Though it probably wouldn't work to use tungsten anyways. Maybe steel would be better?

On theory, it's sound. However, if the wielder is somewhat small in height, there could be issues in handling it.

Besides, a metal-coated shaft would make it heavy to wield. It may be effective to use in horseback, but it could be problematic on the ground...unless the wielder is in a phalanx formation.

the shaft itself wouldn't be coated in metal. just the blade and the counterweight. Though Sailus did think that I should have the shaft lined with metal. The character is tall so it shouldn't have any issues with the size of the weapon.

Yep, high carbon steel is always a good choice.

Gosh thats very long, and here I thought mine was longer(1 meter). Okay nvm checked my height and... its long about like yours but simply just wooden like the monkey's staff(Journey To The West) but hardened wood.

I have tons of issue with the weapon, namely the mass and moment.

It is heavy and slow I assume. I am picturing a naginata with a spiked ball at the other end. It will be useful as a cavalry weapon but for christ's sake, it will suck tailpipe if used as a proper ground weapon like swords.

Also, while Tungsten is hard (can take a shit ton of force before breaking), it is not tough (is brittle, meaning inelastic or cannot bend back to original shape). Why steel is used for weaponry is because it is harder than bronze and why obsidian is the main material for sword is because it is brittle.

I think it's a good weapon then. Just make your character physically powerful to match his weapon stats.

And of course, his fighting style should be more on the 'berserk' side, since the counterweight could also present a risk to his comrades in a tight formation.

Scimitars are typically single edged. You wouldn’t gain much from sharpening the reverse edge.
