Time. Every person who looks at a chapter has a 1% chance of pressing the like button. Eventually, it adds up.

Or, like... Write something incredible that makes people go, "Wow, I might feel guilty if I don't click a little button after reading that."

Force them to like it or no next chapter.

Well joking aside, I don't normally give like, unless I like that particular chapter or wanted more.

There are readers who favorite every chapter as support and encouragement for the author.

But the average reader will binge and forget to do so, except something extraordinary happens in the chapter and they can’t resist but hit the heart button. The probability of that happening increases when the chapter is longer.

More readers also means more chances to get hearts. But you need time or more content to attract readers.

most don't bother, some don't even know. you can remind em under every chapter if you want. I've seen a good amount of authors do it
And annoy readers every chapter just for a small boost of the chance to appear in the trending list?

It's luck. Sometimes you'll get a friendly reader who will like every chapter! But most times readers won't bother. But at least SH has a feature that shows how far some readers have gotten in your story, so you know how many have actually read it.
Also, you can like your own chapters which adds up if you do it every time you upload. That can also inflate a like count.

I think there is also some value in how large your story is, unfortunately as it might sound. Up until my story hit 50k words and 20 or so chapters I also had much fewer favourites than afterwards (and readers too). probably some sort of psychological commitment - if the story is too small yet they don't feel as committed to it either and thus resulting in fewer likes.

a short reminder at the end of the chapter would most likely help, but not a lot. I think I talked about my likes twice in my chapters inside AN at the end of the chapter and both of these had received a noticeable boost in likes in return. But it didn't double them either.

Other than that: the quality of the chapter. Length of the chapter and hooked audience.

I didn't even know what the hearts were for. Last week it finally clicked but, I'm not going back to the few hundred chapters stories I read before figuring that out.

I wonder how other authors can get 10+ hearts just on the first chapter alone, am I doing something wrong?

(To be more specific, this is the story in question: https://www.scribblehub.com/series/401666/-days-as-my-alternate-self/ ,though my other series have a miserable 1:1 favorites to readers ratio too...)
If you are talking of directly off release it is either because you are a popular author and promoted this work, or you know 9+ other people who would do you a solid and like it. Of course there is also random chance paired with talent where it can get popular quickly, but that is rather rare.

Yeah, I tend to save 10+ chapters to a text to speech bot before binging them. Unless it is something very good to me, I probably won’t go back to like. Except if it was the last of the 10 chapters, there is a 20% chance I remember to like it.
