I assumed it was a made-up person, but a quick google search says that there are two Pearsons. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karl_Pearson who 'established mathematical statistics', and his son https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Egon_Pearson
Karl is apparently not the best person who ever lived though, since the first paragraph in his wikipedia article calls him a racist. ?
