Two options. Create a world then think of a story in that world. Or think of a story, then build a world around it.

One thing a lot of people forget then writing: the world doesn't wait for an mc. There might be riots, a festival, discoveries, meetings, etc all happening elsewhere that can flavor the world in the background while the mc is off doing his/her thing. (I noticed many web novels of many nations forget about the world as a whole.)

A bit of elaboration. You can gain a lot more 'substantial' tips, but the only way to actually improve is to write more. Write more, write every day, and each month or two, look back at what you wrote. Analyze the things you wrote and things you can improve, things that came out good. Other people will probably give you tips, specifically about your story. However, without enough practice, you won't get enough from those tips. It will be a one-time improvement. Write more.

You should write a LOT more than you publish. Even Tolkien had a Slush Pile, which is a bunch of writings that he had no intention of ever publishing, or that he deemed so bad that the public would never see it. (Part of what makes Tolkien crazy in the eyes of us mortals is that his slush pile is widely considered publishable, among other things.)

What I'm trying to say here, in more poetic terms than I'm worth, is KEEP EVERYTHING. You can always go back to it later, and rehash and adapt. Also don't be afraid of inspiration. I'm trying to write a light-hearted fantasy adventure with a dash of trans for NaNoWriMo, and my inspiration for it? A goddamn rhythm game, I do not cap.

Also NaNoWriMo is an excellent time to give yourself an excuse to SIT AT YOUR WRITING INSTRUMENT AND WRITE. :)

A lot of people were pointing mistakes here and there and by with the time, I simply made less mistakes.

Don't by afraid of publishing a 'first try' novel, you can rewrite it later like how many do.

A Fanfic could also be a good idea if you want to test thing first.

I'll tell you how to get better. Write and publish what you have. When you publish what you have, listen to the criticism. They aren't being mean; they are just trying to help you. Doesn't matter how harsh they sound. Also, ignore those who are plainly hating with no feedback. Hasn't happened to me, but it has happened to others. An important lesson to know is the on the internet, words cannot carry emotions.

Use read-aloud, Grammarly, and ProWritingAid to help you catch things too. I have to say read-aloud is the most important out of everything.

I have to agree that the best way is to just write. You dont get better without practice. That being said, writing also includes storytelling, worldbuilding and a lot of different skills that while I think also requiere practice, you also need to learn their specifics (for example, you need to known that show > tell). Theres plenty of material in the internet that can help you. Ive personally feel I improve a lot by reading tips about how to write specific genres, but that depends on you

Write what you love, and someone else will also love it.
