I feel truly humbled to see that we are speaking in hundreds of thousands and millions here. Some of those counts... WOW! Incredible!!!

My old writing including actual stories, histories and detailed notes (pre 2008)... I would roughly estimate around 175,000 to 200,000 words.

Since I have started back (July 2020):

Histories (written like a novel): 140,000.
Intended story (Shadow of the Eclipse, in sig): 150,000 at the moment.
Discarded story elements (could be used later): 65,000
And detailed notes (short scenes, explanations and explorations): 80,000


I am surprised, I have not actually looked at the overall numbers until now. How is this possible? over 430,000 written in 14 months!

I know it is not like some of the numbers here, but I am genuinely confused how this happened. Damn. AWESOME!!!

I have published about 160k words so far. However, I feel like chasing word count is very counterproductive - I want to write less with greater impact rather than wordy but diluted. I want my readers to come out satisfied with every chapter I post as it delivers a significant portion of the story without spending too much on unnecessary details.

In fact, I actually feel dissatisfied that I went to 160k already. For I think that my story would only benefit with lousier parts fully cut out.

Interesting point of view. However, that is a good count! And quality is always better than quantity either in short or long. This applies to both little too big counts. But some people like to be descriptive and remain the same quality.~ It creates immersion to some point too. Others like to be less so and still gather the same effect! It all depends on the writers' style of choice and how well they can accomplish it.

Well, in web format, a single book can go on for hundreds of chapters. While in physical, books will only have 300ish pages and around 20 chapters. Thus, 1 book of, let's say, 300k words might be multiple books. Like a series, per se. So you are right in that sense. But it also depends on the story. I have had actual books that cut off at an important part. To continue it in the second one.

If I were to divide my chapters, I would have around 77 chapters for 1 book. Divide that by, let's say, 20 per book, and I would have what? 4ish books? For 1 story per se. *My stories are generational thus don't follow the same character. I divided my books like that instead of creating one for each arc.* So, in my chapters usually, there are multiple events happening in one instead of one. I tend to be descriptive, but people also tell me they love that about my stories.

And yeah, I could divide them and be like everyone else, but at the same time, I don't feel like it. I don't write for others or am looking for a means of money for my story. And no one has complained so I feel like I am fine. As long as 1 person enjoys it, I am happy. And I get amazing peeps reading it, no haters. *This doesn't mean they do not give me feedback. I still have much to learn.*

But that is for me as a writer. As a reader, I also like my stories to be descriptive. Like I tend to get lost in dialogue when there are multiple characters present and write doesn't show who is talking. I also like to see the emotional part of the characters and that usually falls on the description part. These are just two examples. I had people tell me they would like me to describe my world more, so I need to get better at that sense. Thus, my style of writing is what I like to see too.

Now, if you are talking about fillers, like things that should not be happening or don't contribute to the story... 100% agreed. I don't need to know what the fisherman on the side and his history are if he isn't essential to the story. *Even if it is touching.* Heck, make that a side story. That is where I draw my line. There is a description and there is abundance. I don't like abundance. It is why slow stories also throw me off. I like fast... So I tend to go fast too.

It is a personal viewpoint, and not for readers either. Problem is - I write the story in book form with the usual four acts. as such, I can't just take it and cut it in half. Luckily for me, my readers have been satisfied with my quality and content so far despite me knowing I could do better. And I do believe that a major reason why they like it is that it has no useless scenes most of the time - they might be overly describtive but they are still there for a reason and they progress either the plot or develop characters further. (or set up yet another Chekhov's gun on the wall)
