Maybe another student in the school becomes friends with your character and from then on stuff happens? For personality wise, maybe she can be really competitive person who can be narrowed minded at times but who's also likes doing dangerous stuff for the thrills?

I like the competitive part, that could work as my character is fairly laid back and she could try to compete with him.

For instance, I like taller (and older) guys. Thoughtful / experienced with life. Humble (not arrogant). Driven by something that means a lot to them.
