Basically, the main site is a place used to talk about your novels. When an author posts a new status, all of their followers are notified. It is expected that the writers will use that primarily for the sake of updates on what they're writing.

On the other hand, the forums are here for socializing. Status updates are whimsical things you can do to talk about whatever you want without minding things too much.

They serve very different purposes, it wouldn't make much sense to make them overlap.
