In a way, isn't that also partially wish fulfillment - reading someone who doesn't need put much real effort in courting system and will still get someone? If you think of harem from the wish-fulfillment perspective, it's less about polygamy, and more about a guy being super popular with all the girls fawning over him.
It's the type of story aimed specifically towards the really shy people that never had the courage to ask anyone out I'd guess. A story in which all girls fall for the MC without him needing to put any real effort in courting them seems exactly what this audience would like... Which is also why those stories often end up with either an inconclusive finale on who's the final pairing, or with just a single person at the end... Because most people still wish for monogamy in the end, not polygamy. So having a harem ending isn't really what they want in their wish-fulfillment story.
It technically is... unless the protagonist eventually dies....In a way, isn't that also partially wish fulfillment - reading someone who doesn't need put much real effort in courting system and will still get someone?

*coughs* I only get these numbers when the spam post of NUF becomes active... It's usually dead for like... 11 months of the year, but sometimes someone goes haywire and gives everyone else a few thousand alerts... >.>
I think I called this part as total wish fulfillment though? Like... I agree with you, I just wouldn't call it "partially wish fulfillment", but rather, the very core of the wish-fulfillment aspect of harem novels. In a way, isn't that also partially wish fulfillment - reading someone who doesn't need put much real effort in courting system and will still get someone?

Honestly? I have no idea. I have no interest in Harem, though I realize I am in the minority here on SH. I guess the escapist, power fantasy is a huge draw for some people. Why it's more popular than normal genres though? No clue. Why though? Why is it so popular as opposed to normal fantasy or Sci fi. Is it just erotica?
Also, I don't know how many of ya yongsters here remember the guud old times of paper books..Honestly? I have no idea. I have no interest in Harem, though I realize I am in the minority here on SH. I mean, I suppose it could be because while there are plenty of places one can read traditional Western fantasy and sci fi, this place caters more to those Eastern genres. That's my best guess.
Lol....Also, I don't know how many of ya yongsters here remember the guud old times of paper books..
But shit ton of them also were semi-harem. We just called it "love triangle", or "love polyhedron" or "MC being a player". Like seriously, we only remember the more respected novels, but If like me you bought a lot of cheap fantasy/sci fi, there was tons of wish fullfilment stories where our hero would capture the heart of new interest every chapter. The only difference being they wouldn't later follow him along.
(One of the series some of you might recognize would be The Witcher book series for example, that MC got laid all the time)
I think it would be stretching the definition of the Harem genre a great deal to include series where there is a lot of sex or a love triangle. Like, I wouldn't give Harem nearly that much credit. Also, I don't know how many of ya yongsters here remember the guud old times of paper books..

Yes, the wish-fulfillment is certainly always a part of fiction, and part of wish fulfillment is always getting the babe/dude. But I think there is more to it than that before you could call it Harem.
Maybe....I think Mr/Miss @KVTX left since there was no reply after this thread was created for 5 seconds.
