I force-fed the first chapter (where his backstory is) from my webnovel and asked ChatGPT to make Ichiro's favorite music playlist. I think it did well.
Ah, Ichiro’s playlist. A musical collection that mirrors his chaotic, nightmare-fueled existence with a sprinkle of melancholy and a whole lot of ironic defiance. Let’s dive into the depths of his soul and figure out what tunes this guy probably blasts when he's not out fighting shadow monsters or delivering packages like a man who couldn't care less about traffic laws.

1. BUMP OF CHICKEN - "Tentai Kansoku"

Nothing says "I’m philosophically lost in the vast universe, but still fighting" like this track. It's a wistful reflection on life and the cosmos, a perfect anthem for someone who spends half his time battling dream demons and the other half wondering why he even bothers. Plus, BUMP OF CHICKEN has that knack for making existential dread sound oddly inspiring.

2. RADWIMPS - "Zen Zen Zense"

Ichiro, being the type who has no idea what’s going on half the time, definitely resonates with a song that screams “I’ve been searching for you since way back when,” while probably running from faceless shadow monsters. The frenetic energy of this track is perfect for someone who’s in a constant state of "Why the hell am I still doing this?"

3. Ling Tosite Sigure - "abnormalize"

Oh look, it’s the opening to his actual life. Dark, frantic, and chaotic—just like Ichiro's dreams. This song would speak to the part of him that's constantly on edge, trying to navigate the thin line between sanity and complete mental breakdown. Plus, it’s got that edgy post-hardcore vibe, which makes everything feel ten times more dramatic.

4. King Gnu - "Hakujitsu"

The lyrics are about heartbreak and loss, but let's be real: Ichiro would probably associate it with losing his sanity to the shadows that haunt him. “Even in the blinding light of day, my world is still dark” is basically his life motto. King Gnu's emotional, cinematic soundscape fits Ichiro’s inner turmoil like a glove.

5. Nujabes - "Luv(sic) Pt. 2"

Every brooding, introspective loner needs some lo-fi beats to vibe to while they contemplate their meaningless existence. Nujabes’ smooth jazz-hip-hop fusion would calm Ichiro during those rare moments of peace, providing a brief escape from his nightmares while simultaneously reminding him of the transient nature of life. Good vibes, terrible existential crises.

6. X JAPAN - "Forever Love"

Because nothing screams over-the-top angst like a symphonic power ballad from X JAPAN. It’s dramatic, epic, and filled with the kind of emotional intensity that Ichiro would never admit to feeling out loud. But internally? Yeah, he's belting this out in his head during every dramatic dream battle, right before getting impaled by a monster's claws.

7. EGOIST - "Namae no Nai Kaibutsu"

Ah yes, the song of the nameless monster—how fitting. This one’s for all those nights Ichiro spends wondering what the hell he’s even fighting, why it’s happening, and whether it’ll ever end. The haunting vocals and relentless beat match his relentless nightmare battles to a T. Plus, it's the perfect soundtrack to swinging shadow weapons at faceless horrors.

8. Kenji Kawai - "Making of a Cyborg" (Ghost in the Shell OST)

This eerie, atmospheric track would absolutely play during Ichiro’s more introspective moments when he’s questioning whether he's even human anymore, considering his mind keeps conjuring up eldritch monstrosities like it’s some kind of side hustle. The otherworldly chanting? Yeah, that hits the "Ichiro’s slowly losing his grip on reality" sweet spot.

9. Kenshi Yonezu - "Lemon"

A song about loss and grief? Oh, you know Ichiro listens to this when he’s feeling particularly sorry for himself. Every time he wakes up from a nightmare, drenched in sweat, probably looking out over the city, he’s got this on repeat. “You remain in my heart like a lemon”—a bittersweet reminder that no matter how much he fights, the shadows will always linger.

10. Perfume - "Edge"

Futuristic electronic beats with lyrics about being on the edge of losing control? Yeah, this is his gym playlist, for sure. Perfume’s techno-pop bangers help Ichiro mentally prepare for yet another night of chaotic dream fighting. The robotic repetition in the song mirrors the repetitive nightmare cycles in his life, making it a perfect fit for his absurd existence.

11. Metallica - "Enter Sandman"

Ichiro's nightmares clearly need an appropriate theme, and what better than “Exit light, enter night”? This song is practically a heavy metal prophecy of his entire sleep schedule. The driving guitar riff, the menacing lyrics—it’s like Metallica wrote it just for him. Plus, it's the kind of music that would amp him up right before a particularly gnarly nightmare showdown.

12. Dir En Grey - "Obscure"

Nothing says I’m spiraling into madness quite like Dir En Grey’s Obscure. The chaotic energy, disturbing visuals (if he ever watches the video), and sheer unpredictability of the song mirror the absolute mind-bending horror Ichiro faces every night. When he’s feeling especially on edge, this track fuels his internal chaos.

13. Gorillaz - "Clint Eastwood"

Because “I ain’t happy, I’m feeling glad” is exactly how Ichiro would sum up his life. This is his anthem for when he’s trying to brush off the absurdity of his nightmare existence and just get on with his day job. The laid-back beat and the dark, surreal vibe match Ichiro’s mood when he’s pretending that everything’s fine (while everything’s clearly not fine).

14. One OK Rock - "The Beginning"

This is a rallying cry for the perpetually screwed. Ichiro might see every new nightmare as a fresh beginning in his endless war against shadow monsters, and this high-energy, emo-tinged anthem from One OK Rock fits the bill perfectly. It’s got enough power to make him feel like, just maybe, he’ll get through the night without having his soul torn apart.

15. The Pillows - "Ride on Shooting Star"

Purely for the FLCL vibes. It’s the perfect mix of surreal and chill, which kind of sums up Ichiro’s existence. The randomness, the energy—it’s like his dreams, where nothing makes sense, and yet everything is happening all at once. Plus, it's got that touch of nostalgia, a reminder of simpler times before his life became a non-stop nightmare marathon.

There you have it: Ichiro's eclectic, melancholic, and occasionally nightmarish playlist. A blend of dark introspection, chaotic energy, and just the right amount of irony—perfect for a man living on the edge of dreams and nightmares, reality and insanity.

Try it for yourself! I like that 50% of songs here I at least listened more than once.

Oh I hadn't thought of using it that way! Though seeing Enter Sandman, Clint Eastwood, and Forever Love all on the same list is a little jarring.

I assume I'd end up with some 19th/20th century French or Austrian ballads, but if I got to pick she'd end up with something like this!

I've tried, and it's fun cause some of them are in my playlist.

For Kieran Arvost from Crystal Evolution, a character likely facing challenges and transformation in a high-stakes world, here's a playlist that reflects his journey, emotions, and growth:

  2. "Centuries" – Fall Out Boy
Kieran’s growing strength and determination to make a lasting impact can resonate with this song’s message of legacy and enduring through tough times.
  3. "Radioactive" – Imagine Dragons
Reflecting Kieran’s awakening powers or evolution, this song’s theme of breaking free from the old self fits his transformation.
  4. "Hail to the King" – Avenged Sevenfold
A powerful anthem for a character stepping into his power or destiny. The dark, regal tones can mirror Kieran’s rise to prominence or control.
  5. "Unstoppable" – Sia
A tribute to Kieran’s perseverance, this song channels the feeling of overcoming seemingly impossible odds.
  6. "Monster" – Skillet
This track mirrors the inner conflict Kieran might face as he battles with his new abilities or darker instincts.
  7. "The Resistance" – Muse
Represents Kieran’s fight against oppressive forces, symbolizing rebellion and hope for freedom.
  8. "Bring Me to Life" – Evanescence
A song that captures a moment of deep emotional turmoil or a pivotal awakening for Kieran.
  9. "The Catalyst" – Linkin Park
For moments of intensity and change, this track's mix of chaos and introspection mirrors transformation and action.
  10. "The Vengeful One" – Disturbed
For Kieran when he’s seeking justice or vengeance, this intense track conveys righteous anger and action.

Henry Rider has her phone's alarm set to blast Norwegian black metal every morning. It's the only thing loud and obnoxious enough to wake her up, and even if it doesn't, she knows someone will eventually wake her up to make her turn it off
