If technology like the Transporter from Star Trek, or the Stargates from the Stargate series were real, allowing you to get from place to place here on earth, practically instantly and also much cheaper too... Most of the specifics of how they work are, from your point of view incomprehensible technobable, but you understand the gist of it to be that, it de-materializes you, transports the information and "energy" to the destination, and then re-materializes "you" there...

The Proponents of the technology laud its 100% safety record, of how nobody have ever died or suffered any injuries, etc... and its extreme low cost, of less than 1% of cost of travelling the same distance with next cheapest method, and its extreme, practically instant/infinite speed, and non-existent ecological footprint, etc...

The Opponents on the other hand argue that its actually 100% fatal, and that if you step into it, its lights out forever for you! and its merely a duplicate, who goes on living, in your stead! They argue, that what arrives at the destination may look like you, and think they're you, and have all your memories, but ultimately they're are as distinct of a person from you, as every other person on this earth...

So... Would you step into the Transporter/Suicide Booth?

--

If the Creators of the Transporter/Suicide Booth, introduced an optional safety mechanism, where the scanning at the point of origin is performed non-destructively, and your dematerialization is performed Only after a confirmation of your safe arrival and successful materialization have been received from the destination... So there should be absolutely no change that you might be de-materialized, and yet fail to be successfully re-rematerialized...

If this additional safety system was available whenever stepping on the Transporter/Suicide booth, would you use it?

FULL STEAM AHEAD!
Doesn't matter if my "original" body died, as long as the "copy" has my life philosophy and goal I consider it as "me"

I don't care if what comes out the teleporter is a eldritch monstrosity or an anime girl, as long as it considers the color blue as the best color then that's not so different from me, atleast we could consider each other as having something in common.

Had this dilemma before where what if I'm not the "original". After days of existential crisis, I figured that our body might be separated but what is common is the raison d'etre...

(Ok, enough conspiracy for today...)

I mean, as you've said, the alternative death. So if I live, I'll just be living. If I die, well, I won't be there to suffer. So why the fuck not?

I just hope my alternate self knows what the fuck to do next.

Ha! Heck no. Teleportation I think is one of those Sci fi concepts that I think will never come to light. I am more confident in the viability of warp drive than teleporting.

It is my personal belief that anyone who goes into a "teleporter" would be totally annihilated and then have a corpse appear on the other side.

Whether you believe consciousness lies in a soul (and teleportation is therefore impossible) or that consciousness manifests from brain patterns, it isn't good.

With the latter, you'd need not only a way to immediately get the data for every single atom in your body, but also the exact signals going on in your brain, and all the neural pathways that have formed.

I cannot overstate how impossibly hard that is. The human brain is the most complex object we have ever found in the universe, and I think that it would be centuries before we could even think about something like have a perfect 3d model of the brain.

Even then, we have the question of if the person on the other side is you. I'm inclined to believe no.

Such a technology I think would also be utterly useless in a society that could accomplish it. Unless there are major changes in our understanding of physics, the data of your body and mind has to move sub-light speeds, and I really think that normal space travel is much less of a headache.

I say space travel, because if you're willing to walk into the possible death machine simply to get to the other side of a planet you are a profound idiot.

I'm going to be the first guy to teleport, and I'll use it exclusively to find you and smack your smug grin with a pair of kitchen tongs.

Depends. If they work the way they actually work in the properties, which is to say that they allow you to exist in two places simultaneously, then yes. Granted, different writers have over the course of the shows (especially Star Trek) screwed up the idea.

But if it works like the internet says, then no, I wouldn't.

What? I only said I had it from the highest authority on the subject that teleportation doesn't work that way.

I'm not really sure what kind of joke you're making about fax machines...
