Like, the MC is so spineless that because of his constant abuse of women that they literally flipped the switch of the MC as he....

- Sees a naked girl bathing and instead of simply apologizing, he would respond in being apologetic that to the point where even when women were trying to flirt with her , he would respond in a way that causes damage to a girl's self esteem due to him being apologetic to the point where he deemed her being a bland character.

-Instead of the usual troupe of saving a girl from thugs, he would apologize to the thugs that they had to rape a girl because she is so horny to the point of wearing revealing outfit that they would be desperate enough to rape her.

-Instead of being dense, he is so spineless to the point that he had to date an ugly girl just in spite because he didn't have to be desperate enough to chase beautiful girls.

I mean, the mc could be spineless, sure. but what about the other girls? the one who got furious about seeing the mc naked and the one who admonishing him.

if the first girl is just plain abusive and the other girl are just a busybody I doubt anyone would stay long to read such a thing.

i've read some LN with spineless MC, but the other characters are actually interesting and the MC are actually makes a real effort to improve themselves.


basically, I don't think it's solely because of the premise like that would make the whole thing to be horrible.

but yeah I also admit that considerable amount of people would stay away from such story no matter how masterful the delivery is.

You just described nearly everything wrong with most Japanese ideas of a "harem". If he's not beta as hell, he's dense. Either one is unrealistic and aggravating. Spare us all.

I don't even understand the point of adding a beta-douche in the harem genre. Realistically, if a bunch of pretty women constantly throw themselves at you, fuck your morals, eventually, YOU WILL taste-test unless you're gay or already in a committed relationship with someone else and wish to stay loyal. As for the dense morons, I can see how someone can miss verbal cues and vague gestures. Women seem to have this obnoxious idea that men should be able to read their minds and pick up on extremely vague verbal hints and gestures. But when a woman is literally laying all over you, flashing herself, and various other OBVIOUS cues used in anime...that's not dense, that's plain braindead. Japan needs to learn the difference.

Japan doesn't even do harem by the definition of a harem. Most of them end with MC dating either only one person, or it ends without any conclusion whatsoever. That's not a harem. Japan doesn't even know what a harem is. If MC doesn't end up with 3 or more romantic partners at the same time by the end, then it wasn't a harem.

It depends, one may wonder why is he using the same bathroom as the girl. Do they live together? It is a kind of public bathroom? The answer to those questions is what could make it interesting.

On the other hand, if the MC is so cripplingly spineless or shy, there ought to be a reason. There have to be opportunities for him to slowly grow a spine and become a more assertive person, otherwise, it would be boring to read.

When I saw title I thought about the protag from Fight Club(film, I'd say book's MC is a bot more meaty and even more esoteric... memory iffy on book lore tho), someone drifting through life and seeking meaning and communion in the shittiest of places, just being the unresponsive, unresistant plaything of an uncaring universe.

Something like the OP would bore me tbh. too mundane.

In 4koma format as a gag comic, yes. In an expanded written work, HELL NO. That would get old, really fast.

Just don't make it look like a typical story where almost every or 3 out of 5 male mob have a suddenbone to dick him. In a harem setting due to a passive ability called Troublegiver Magnet that almost most Beta or Cool Kid possess will either bring unjustified violence or troublesome quests to the male MC, who will what become the sandbag slave of some sort? Unless your MC is a closet or a hidden Machochist. It will be a good development or standout if your spineless MC can show the best of himself on where he stand or draw the lines at certain times and choices.

It would work as a comedy, the funny type. These common tropes were derived from manzai. Basically, one guy acts as the fool and the other guy acts as the straight guy. The fool does or says something stupid and the straight guy chastizes him.

Here's an example:
Fool: Aliens are scary, na?
Straight: They are, they are. Have you seen aliens before, Tako-san?
Fool: Of course, Kako-san. Just yesterday I saw them slurping ramen at Kobayashi-san's stall.
Straight: Aliens... slurping ramen?
Fool: Yes... they had darker skin and the slurping sound is very different. I think they were from India.
Straight: You idiot! (smacks head) That's illegal aliens!

As you can see, in your example, the protagonist is the fool, while the girl is the straight man. Is it funny? Ai-chan doesn't know about you, but don't say you never laughed watching the protagonist in animes got slapped until he went spinflying after he saw the girl naked. It's just that you don't find it funny anymore because in addition to the manzai, you have to suffer spineless protagonist who wouldn't defend himself. This is why Kazuma from Konosuba appeals to most anime watchers, since although he does get abused, he too deals abuse due to being 'a true proponent of gender equality'.
