Why exploit your child? While we’re on the subject. Are we expect aliens since we have a miss universe contest and not miss earth.

What are child pagents?
You mean parents? Because biology allows it.
Pageants? Why not? Weirder shit exist.

Aliens are already here.

Let's just say that society has objectified the female body from the cradle to the grave :blob_hmm:

Also money.

Also aliens exist, and one of them's 7'3 playing for the San Antonio Spurs.

It’s not cute if only the parent’s are the one benefiting, if the kid does too it is fine by me.

Because stupid parents want to feel superior to others, and if their own merit is not enough, they will push that desire onto their childern. Also, money.

And since the aliens are clearly not participating, they are giving up their claim to Miss Universe by default.

It started from parents saying their child is the cutest.
Then it went to "What? You think my child isn't cute?"
Then it went to "My child is cuter than yours!"
Then it went to "You're talking nonsense, let's ask other people!"
Then it went to "No, you're all her neighbours, let's go ask the townspoeple!"
Then it went to "Wow, so many people attending. Why not sell roasted corn and nuts to people coming to watch?"
Then it went to "Hey, the town can make money if we endorse this as an event. People will come from the next town over. Let's call it child pageant!"
Then it went to "The next town had a child pageant last week. It was such a rad. We should have our own child pageant. God knows our commercial section could use the traffic."
Then it went to "My child can't win if she doesn't show off some skin."

And it just went downhill from there.

Its not a problem with only beauty pageants. Football and law school also have the same issue. Its a cultural thing, where the ideal of honoring your elders becomes corrupted into being the possession of your elders.

It's a reflection of our cultural values. If enough people want to do a thing and have nothing better to do, it happens. There could be some positive aspects, depending on how it's carried out. If the child isn't pressured into it, it's an opportunity for self-discovery and spending quality time with parents.

I did a pageant as a teenager, and until that point, I didn't have any skills to speak of in terms of makeup or hair care. Learning that stuff and going around to various places with my mom gave me some wonderful memories.

These days, with a toddler who uses me as a jungle gym, I never bother with makeup, but it's good to know that stuff in case it becomes relevant in my life again.

We didn't hire a pageant coach or anything like that, but I believe a pageant coach would also focus on things like public speaking skills and how to move gracefully.

And let's not overlook the incredibly creepy part about MOST of the girl pageants being judged by grown men. ???

Parents are dumb and want to express themselves through their children since they never won a beauty pageant. Also, child exploitation is a tale as old as civilization.
Pretty much this. It is one thing if the person is 18 and can fully consent to whatever they are doing, it is another for an underaged person to be put in that position.

I’ve never supported it. It is just something wrapped up in deception for what is effectively legal child exploitation.

Our laws have a lot of loopholes, that naturally. The politicians refuse to close it out.
