Name your top five writers who have inspired you the most, with the top single reason for each. I'll go first.

William Blake, for his unmatched imagination (he wasn't just a genius, he was an EPIC genius).
Sylvia Plath, for how powerfully she communicated emotions (may she rest in peace).
Gene Wolfe, for his surpassing skill (dude was the GOAT, nobody writes like him)
George Orwell, for his ability to write profoundly complex ideas in alarmingly simple sentences (who controls the past controls the future, who controls the present controls the past).
Virginia Woolfe, for giving us The Waves, one of the most beautiful works of the modernist period (and a whole lot more, she was amazing).

Tolkien, for how he constructed an entire world--including a fictional language--to immerse his readers in Middle Earth.

C.S. Lewis, for creating simple, yet lovable characters and narratives in his Narnia lore.

Rowling, for how she became an established author, as well as the deep characters of her Harry Potter series.

Noboru Yamaguchi, for my introduction to the isekai genre thru his Zero no Tsukaima novels.

I know this guy's still unknown outside ScribbleHub, but yeah, Benjephenet. I admire his mental fortitude even when every 'prim and proper' people is dissing (and judging) his works (actually good tho, imo).

Brandon Sanderson. The man is a fucking genius at worldbuilding. Even the MONETARY system could be an intrinsic part of society in more ways than simple currency.
Sherilyn Kenyon. She can write some of the most tragic and heartbreaking backstories and make you tear up, but soften that with some good humor and wholesome moments depicting the importance of family(the ones you choose) and brotherhood.
Natsume Akatsuki. Oh this dude is just fucking HILARIOUS. His sense for comedy is insane.

I dont really have anyone else i care enough about to justify putting them up here. Those three are the main ones, period. Even the LotR and Harry Potter series i cant put up here. Why? Because while i did enjoy those stories, i didnt enjoy them as much as i did reading ANYTHING from these authors.

Like in all the stories these guys wrote, particularly Kenyon, there wasnt a single book or series from them i didnt love every second of reading.

In other series from other authors i may enjoy book one and find the second or third book meh. These three weren't like that.

the amanoja9 : this guy has the biggest obsession about women with dicks out of every doujin writer i've seen. you can see it by how detailed he emphasized the surgery scars beneath their boobs.

rebis: probably one of the reason i was into futa in the first place. their doujins do hit different, and they have a nice take about turning males into futanari in their doujins.

dowman sayman: their stories are wonderfully weird. i dig a lot of their works.

ayane: out of the yuri authors i'm interested in, they really come out on top. while mira and shichoson made good stories, ayane's works just hit different for me.

garo magazine authors: they're mostly great. but among them i recommend palepoli by furuya usamaru (his other works are fire as well), and nekojiru udon.

Edgar Saltus- for his style. The cadence of his syllables and mastery of his tone is downright hypnotic.

Hermann Hesse- His deep dives into the spiritual aspects of mankind through fiction are enthralling and make you think.

George McDonald- his fairy tales and fantasy inspired my younger self a great deal.
Guy Gavriel Kay- Particularly for the Fionavarr Tapestry. The way he incorporated different mythologies together moved me. Still one of the best takes on the King Arthur tale I have read.

Theodore Roethke- I'm a poet at heart. His poetry and view of the natural world just speaks to my own experience.

Roger Zelazny who has an absolutely incredible narrative voice. The first 5 Amber books plus Lord of Light and Jack of Shadows are pretty close to my benchmarks for "best books I've ever read."

Michael Stackpole, for someone who can work a ton of a real-world history into fantasy novels and has a really easy-to-read style.

Lawrence Watt-Evans whose Ethshar novels have one of the absolute best-developed and interesting fictional worlds.

Garrett Mattingly (a historian; as far as I know didn't write fiction) who convinced me that narrative history could be as interesting as fiction.

Jack McKinney (yes, I'm aware it's a pen name of two other authors) because as a punk kid around 35 years ago I both enjoyed the heck out of the Robotech novels but also thought hey, I can probably write like this (no, I can't, but hey, when you're 12 or so Dunning-Kruger is on steroids.)

Honorable mentions to Leo Frankowski and David Weber, both of whom demonstrate that you can break standard rules horribly and still write good books if you can break the rules in entertaining-enough ways (in Weber's case, chapter-long infodumps, and in Frankowski's, Gary-Stu protagonists and softball plots which are better at home in fanfic.)

Dude, another Zelazny fan! He was an absolute treasure. I almost put him on my list too but I like Gene Wolfe just a bit more fore the same reasons. I havent dug inti the Amber series yet tho. But I love Lord of Light and This Immortal, and Creatures of Light and Darkness is one of my favorite books of all time.
