Long as the pirate isn't another one piece knock off it has potential.

Though currently id choose the proving grounds academy since that is my favorite type of of litRPG as along as it is well written...many are not.

The pirate idea is better. However, a magic-based hand-waiving story is ultimately boring. There is no real tension or investment in feelings because the author will always use magic to explain nonsense. For example, the protagonist's ship is in a storm, so he uses his wind magic to create a bubble to protect the ship and crew. This is boring. Any tense moments are instantly resolved because the author makes a magic that resolves it.

What is actually interesting is if you use real life mariner knowledge to overcome difficulties.

You're slower than the other ship? Well, send troops on a boat to set its mast on fire.
Barometer dips? Dock, dock, dock!
Mutiny? Well shit, time to kill someone as an example then.
Perfect morale? On a ship at sea? No such thing!

agree with above, don't make another OP knockoff
im leaning more towards pirate but honestly combining the two might be interesting too? like for the battle royales you can have students compete in all-out naval warfare, that'd be fun
and you can advance in naval rankings too, with the Admiral being like, the equivalent of student body president except there's multiples and they all command other students under them blahblah...think military academy except naval-based...

Why not a pirate academy? They fight for who gets what position on which ship, then go out raiding...

One idea is a pirate-themed isekai/litrpg/progression story. A young man gets taken to another world that's almost entirely covered in water, and finds out that he's a direct descendent of a Siren bloodline, which allows him to use the Hymn, a magic language that lets him control anything he knows the word for. He acquires a Hymnal to store his collection of ancient words, and sets off to learn as many as he can, building a crew and eventually a fleet of his own as he does so.
This one.

Though, I hope it has no game-like stats or whatsoever, only the stored spells at most. But that's only a matter of preference.

Pirate feels the more fun scenario, but the battle academy pitch felt more intruiging because it had conflict. Allowing that you throw in some in-baked obstacle or drawback to being Siren-blooded for the pirate to deal with, then I'd settle on that.

you sure love to jump to conclusions about things you have virtually no information about, don't you? I don't think I'll use you as a beta reader again.
