When you age your characters should their hairstyle change?

You know a few years ago I remember they used to have video games where the characters would age, get married, and have kids. And when it first came out people were really excited because it was something new that had never been done. But then they realized when playing that their characters were going to also get old and die in the game and then they'd have to play the next generation.

I guess... it depends on how far you go with it. People probably could benefit from growing from teen to young adult, or adult. But people kind of read fantasy stories to overcome the limits of their humanity. So I don't think they want to see old age written in the story.

You'd probably be OK with hair style changes when younger. And it might even benefit from more art. I wouldn't dramatize old age in the story though.

I hope this is helpful. Feel free to bounce more ideas off us. We do want to help.

Their hair style should change with the times, their age and their personality. Also consider genetic reasons like if thinning/receding hairline runs in the family.

If the character changes jobs or social classes then it is likely they would change too. Unless they are habitual in their appearance for some reason.

Well within the specific age range, not always, but I do change it sometimes for my characters. Just depends on your character. Generally for a lot of people they might change their hair style as an adult compared to when they were 15. When I was 15. My hair was only a little longer than my shoulders and I had side bangs. When I was 21 my hair was almost all the way to my butt and I no longer had bangs. It doesn't have be to something super drastic though.

Depends on the characters and types of stories.
Slice of Life? Probably.
High Fantasy? Probably not.
Superheroes? Whenever the art team changes (just ask Rogue, who somehow went from "Lesbian Willem Dafoe" at 15 when she first appeared to "supermodel" at 17 over two art team changes in 8 years of comics and two titles).

Well...

The novels aren't necessarily good at showing the passage of time, at least in regards to the visual every reader has to imagine for himself or herself.

It's realistic for the person to change their haircut style at least once in 6 years, especially the teenagers who are eager to try out what is fashionable, cool, or gets them the attention they crave, but ...

... the book characters? The readers probably won't pay attention to it at all.

If you were making an anime, well, you would be stuck to one look too, the character needs to be recognizable and would be stuck to one look...

In live action, it would change, and visagiste would have something to do.

Depends on the character's personality and life events.

One of my secondary characters, Fuyuko, has been keeping her hair in a rough short cut because she was orphaned at the age of 8. Long hair is not something she wanted to take care of, and as a street rat, she preferred not being easily spotted as a girl.

But she got adopted at the age of 14, and has started letting her hair grow out. She's still going to put her hair into practical, tight styles if she knows there's a risk of a fight, but she does want to look pretty too. It's come up in story once recently; she asked two other teen girls to help her with her hair, since she wasn't used to it being this long.

Most of the other characters aren't going to have terribly notable hair style changes. Those who like to change their hair a lot are doing so anyway, and others might already be stable. Like there are some teen guys in the story who are basically knights in training, their hair is kept a bit long to be part of the padding underneath their helmets. But it's also kept neat in a style that is easy to tuck up underneath helmets, and not too long because they need to be able to do so quickly.
