We all got weird places to get out creative juices flowing, I wonder what's yours? For me, It's Kane & Lynch 2. That game is awful sure, but the mood and aesthetic is ugly in a beautiful way. Shanghai looks gross in that game, and It stuck with me for awhile. Heavy inspiration on the mood I made for Ultraviolence.

Being a nerd in my 30s may or may not have directly influenced my main character.
For the parts with my world-hopping young witch in an infinite library, it's probably my inability to sit down with just one thing, and also Elaina's Journey was a big inspiration.
Sometimes I'll hear random tidbits that I write down like the musings that most water on Earth has at one point been someone's or something's piss, so I made notes to have corporations in a Cyberpunk world sell 'pure' asteroid water.

For me, It's Kane & Lynch 2.

Honestly, really close to the same for me. Army of Two. The bro-y, positive relationship Salem and Rios have in the first game, just having an absolute blast mowing down waves of corporate baddies, is the same vibe I try to cultivate with my MC and her friends when they're dishing out their own doses of ultraviolence.

Also, only weird because I write Futanari superhero smut, but my MCs parents are almost identical to my own.

Recently, I would say this game: Brush Burial: Gutter World. It's an immersive sim like Deus Ex. You play as a monster girl assassin who knows martial arts, traverses with her tail, and strangles enemies with her thighs. Lots of ways to tackle the levels, good music, and an awesome art style.

She's perfect!

That's a deep cut.

It's gotta be abandoned buildings for me. Something about the decay contrasted with nature reclaiming its spot.

But if we're talking specific media, the album Spiderland by Slint has always stuck with me. Super eerie, spider-like sound built on hypnotic rhythms and jagged guitar lines. I've been trying for the longest time to capture that sort of spookiness.
