I'm talking about stuff that the general public, for a time or still to this day, disliked for any number of reasons, except for it just being bad writing. What were the reasons it was hated? What did you think about the story? Do you think the hate was overdramatized, or was it justified? Would you recommend this book/series or would you rather it never been released? Please do not hate anyone for the stories that they read or their opinions on them.

Jonaxx's stories on Wattpad coz my students recommended her to me.

In case anyone wonders, Jonaxx is a former teacher turned writer in Wattpad, and her romance stories are popular with teenager girls.

Imo, I share Lualhati Bautista's (a legendary Filipina author and once feuded with her supporters on Facebook) take on her works; "Putangina, those are shit."

Jujutsu kaisen was kinda boring it just was like to generic, like if I want secret curse wars I have scp to read wich I find more interesting because I straight up have a hatred for the protagonist being the best which ruins most animes for me, ironically enough is Fairytale my favourite Seinen period.

Just to make it clear for those that don't know Fairytale is a Seinen that is more controversial.

Other Seinen that I didn't like

Bleach has so many fun idea that I prefer any day above the others seinen mentioned but they were just so rushed through, Naruto is a mess where I only liked the first arc, One piece weirds me out with its simplicity and overexaggerating

Side tangent, I like the characterization of overlord and slime tenshi is a good slice of life, Iam a spider, so what had a fun ending even if it was rushed, A wild last boss appeared with Subaku are the best isekai that are actually about the isekai aspect, I'm talking about things like RE:Zero that ignore the isekai aspect in the sense that it is the backstory with some new power as focus

I will share one I guess as a sorry for salting your wound, Paul. I read a book that earned a local controversy, I don't think it is popular abroad at all. A rough, literal translation of the title would be, "Bury me behind the baseboard."

Honestly, I didn't like it since I read it when I wasn't fully formed as a person. I was forced to read it, and I thought it was boring as hell. I have not reread it since then, but from the bits and pieces that I remember I think it wasn't a bad book. It highlighted a lot of problems kids have to go through, one of which is Munchausen by proxy. Even now this mental disorder isn't talked about enough, while back then it was probably a revolutionary. Or maybe I am wrong about this part since I read it long time ago.

Welp, don't have much to say besides this.

A wild last boss appeared
Wild last boss mentioned! I enjoyed it way more than I should have as someone who dislikes Isekai, but the whole thing reminded me way too much of old fantasy anime and golden era (1990-2ks) RPGs.

I hated Sword Art before it was cool to hate on. The whole thing felt like a bad .hack fanfiction, and it only got worse as it tried to do its own thing. Not sure if the retcon did the thing any good, either. It feels like one of those "You gotta read the bad parts first to really appreciate the good parts, I promise they make it all worth it" deals where people wade through shit only to find unterrible parts they praise as gold...

Twillight and 50 shites of Grape... The hate isn't deserved. People should hate it even more since those two single-handedly destroyed both the fantasy and smut landscape like a nuclear mushroom. At least that's what my acquaintances who studied erotic literature and the other bdsm never tire of telling me at our drinking sessions at conventions.

Most Cultivation novels in general. I always laugh at the irony since those novels are neither cultivated nor do they cultivate anything but an unhealthy mindset. Same with those 'Korea Grinders'. I know they are wish-fulfillment and are from emotionally repressed nations, but is it so hard to be a good person in your wishes and dreams?

Arifureta I believe was the name of the manga. Everyone praised it so hard at the time, but while the first arc with the MC inside the dungeon was alright, it all went to shit from the end of the first arc forward, turning from a struggle and revenge story into a largely generic harem isekai in the span of... one or two chapters.

If we extend it to Anime, then Toky Ghoul. I could not get past the first three episodes, I swear, at least half of each episode was the MC crying or whining instead of doing anything useful. The rest of the time he was hardly on screen.

I appreciate it for what it tried to do because at the end of the day it is still one of the better isekais, it just had a bad execution, the abridged version is some of my favourite animation work.

Tokyo Ghoul had interesting ideas and even with it flaws I quite liked it, for me it captured what I liked about supernatural things in a urban setting in a refreshing way,

I am so confused.
Paul wanted to talk about controversial books, traditionally published ones. Books like 50 shades, atlus shrugged, Lolita, and so on. He wanted to hear opinions of people who read them. Unfortunately for Paul, people thought it's yet another "light novels and manga hot takes" thread.

I'll throw in a book!

Animal Farm: A banned book from 1945 that is still relevant today.

Everytime I see someone arguing by drowning out and refusing to think critically I want to start chanting "Two legs bad, 4 legs good." And see if they get the reference. (I don't because it would prob be a little passive agressive)

I liked Twilight (movie, haven't read book) better than 50 (only read book) because the woman showed more initiative in Twilight. 50 was far too one-sided.

I've read Mein Kampf... the writing is sloppy, the lore disjointed and the author screwy... thank God he did nothing else... "What's that Shelley? He did... oh, got a time machine?"

That said, the following are overrated:
* Breaking Bad
* Warhammer
* Serenity
* Attack on Titan
* Demon Slayer
* Tower of God
* DragonBall
* One Piece
* Bleach (Anime, Manga is good)
* Anything with a leveling system that isn't comics. LitRPG sucks.
* Most Chinese stories
* Harem
* Anything with a pussy male character
* Anything by modern Disney since 2016
