I really wasn't a big gamer, I was into other stuff. Still, there was this one period. I got sort of hooked on something vintage.
StarCraft.
When someone wanted to play "retro games" and wanted to have them all on an old laptop... I set them up.
which led to something weird. We had the laptop at a local bar, and were fooling around looking at the old games.
we fired this one *ancient* game on a really old emulator up.
it was called "Excite Bike". (we're talking, museum level shit here, folks)
so we're laughing at this old stuff, and the "music" was more like "bink! bink!" noises.
this older guy comes *charging* over. Eyes, wild. Kind of freaking out.
"Excite bike? I heard excite bike! Where is it? I heard it!"
we just... turned the laptop around so he could see it... put our hands in the air, and sort of backed away.
guy was *freaking* us out.
"Make it... play! Make it... do it!"
we showed him where the keyboard controls were, for the old joystick directions and fire button.
this old fart? started cackling like a little kid. popping wheelies and doing jumps...
i never realized the power of video games, until that moment.
