What is the difference?

Good evening. I was wondering if Scribble Hub is different from platforms such as Webnovel, Wattpad, and Royal Road from the authors' point of view.

Because I just wrote a story mixing gore, absurd cyberpunk fantasy, and dark humor. Like Dorohedoro

I saw a French title and almost had a heart attack !

To answer quickly :

Royal Road : More visited, you will have more readers, but the competition is harsh for the novels in the same category, and some authors don't hesitate to review-bomb their competitors. I would say it's high risk/high reward. If you play the popyularity game, you can climb up fast. The genres that are more popular are general adventure, fantasy, gate/tower emergence, litRPG

ScribbleHub : It's the more 'relaxed' version of Royal Road. Less people, less conflict, less competition, if you are a hobbyist it's better to be here (but you can also post your story on both websites, there is no exclusivity clause). More popular genres : LitRPG, smut, genderbender

Webnovel : This is a website that can allow you to directly make money since you can monetize your chapters. You also have the option to be directly signed with the platform, gaining a steady income as long as you can maintain your rythm (if you have to post a chapter every 3 days, you mustn't be late or the deal is off). It isn't a bad website if your goal is to have a job, it depends on your views

Wattpad : Everything can go on Wattpad. You have people writing LitRPG webnovels, others writing One Direction fanfics, and in the middle you have 10 year olds presenting their first short story. Since it's for all public, the app is swarming in stories and you can be burried easily, but it's also the most 'all public' platform, and you can reach casual readers that wouldn't know about webnovels otherwise

Oh, I forgot Jaime la France with those funny words like bordel or merde, and especially their videos and sketches on YouTube, so I'm having fun writing in French, given what you just showed me. My mix of absurd gore and cyberpunk won't work on the three webnovel platforms. It's not my style, with their dubious contract.

I also found that Wattpad simply doesn't have the traction if you're not writing in 'popular' genres. I'm considering going back to Ao3. Which is also a suggestion you might consider. :s_smile:

Yes, thank you ? You're right, I always have a habit of putting unexpected elements in my stories for readers who are tired of clichés. I'll check out Ao3. Hmm, I've heard that name a few times before.

Any more information? ?

It's formally known as Archive of Our Own. It's free to use (you just need an account) and is similar to SH in terms of ease of use (though I think SH's editor is excellent). Ao3 is used by a lot of fanfic/alternative writers and the community is very friendly and approachable. It's more collaborative in terms of feedback from readers, i.e. they're more 'vocal'. I've both read and posted things there, but I feel like SH is a more 'professional' platform for writers and you should definitely continue to post here. If Ao3 is like a comfy sweater, SH is more like business casual if this metaphor makes sense? I also don't think Ao3 allows things like Patreon (it may have changed as I haven't been on in quite a while, but I don't think so).

Okay, I'll think about it and continue my research. Maybe I'll use it to improve this AO3 site. Thank you.

One little caveat - minor but significant. If you post your story to other sites, you will need to prove it is yours before you can take it live here (which is USUALLY easy to do; one or two days more than usual novel approval) or on Royal Road (often requires much hair-pulling and 2-5 days of back and forth).

There is a long thread one forum regular set up evaluating every site they could find, including SpaceBattles, Substack, HoneyFeed, etc. Might take some searching if he doesn't bump it himself, but it is very useful.

Thanks for the tip.
