Shitposting is a type of humour built on confusion. According to Urban Dictionary it is "funny simply because it isn't a predictable repetition of an existing form" (Urban Dictionary). This passage defines the act as funny because of it's originality, which is simply a staple in all forms of humor. Furthermore, Wikipedia states that the act is "intentionally designed to derail discussions or cause the biggest reaction with the least effort possible." (Wikipedia). This definition makes the act seem more malicious, but it still holds the theme of unpredictability, which can cause the desired effects of such a shitpost. In conclusion, a shitpost is a type of humour which is derived from unforeseen and unexpected media.
However, although these definitions make sense, that doesn't mean it is completely correct. According to Google shitposting is defined as "a form of torture from the 1600s, in which the offender would be tied to a post and have shit thrown at them, as to destroy the devil's influence on the mind of the victim through death of the ego" (Google). This definition is, by all means, completely different to the topic at hand, but it is possible to derive meaning from it. Translated to modern times, the basic idea of the act would be to barrage a person(s) with mind-breaking content. This can come in many ways. It could elude to various forbidden medias such as 2Girls1Cup and 177013. But it can also be speaking of our topic, modern shitposting.
To conclude, the art of shitposting is centuries old and has a rich history, and is not something that can be answered by a single sentence. But just because you cannot fully understand the topic does not mean you can not partake in it, and if it is something you want to do then go on ahead.
