Can someone explain to me what a dungeon core? Honestly have no idea. I thought I would have figured it out by myself now, but I still honestly have no idea. I know I could just read a dungeon core story, but I already have a list of things I want to get to reading and this is faster than that.

It's like a power source that was created through compressed energy. Kind of like a diamond but rather than being compressed carbon it's compressed power. Sometimes they become sentient and become the Lord of the dungeon and other times they just randomly spawn creatures as both a way to protect itself and to release its power.

The exact definition changes from story to story.

Generally speaking, it's either a sentient rock or condensed mana. Mana being the source of magic, and thus capable of miracles like, say, turning a rock sentient.

In my story, it's a sentient computer/phylactery made out of condensed mana/energy. (A phylactery is a magical artifact capable of containing souls.) It has several magitech functions engraved into it's (I still haven't fleshed out this concept: 'magical DNA') that allow it to cast super OP spells and collect the enormous amounts of energy required to use those spells.

That should be the gist of it... But I feel like it's still unclear?

Depending on the story and setting, a dungeon core can be many things and in many forms, but even so, there are some parts that are mostly agreed on.

1_ a dungeon core is an item at the heart of the dungeon( maybe a glowing rock, maybe a sword, depending on the story and setting)

2_ dungeon core is essential for a dungeon and so the moment it's removed or destroyed it will be the end of the dungeon.

3_ a dungeon core create or control monsters inside of the dungeon (those monsters may be spawned by the core, from the outside world, or even imprisoned in the dundeon)

Yes, it is. Now go repent for leaving a lackluster answer and return to me with a reply that wouldn't lose to one of Jemini's in quality or length.

I mean, pay me first, and maybe I'll find the motivation. Probably not though.

I think it's depending on the story what kind of dungeon it is.
Personally, I like the idea of dungeons as plants. They use the mana of the environment to grow. Because of that, they can't cut their passages to the surface as they are like roots, just leading opposite to the surface, or they would suffocate themselves (air/magic). On this basis, living things are much bigger chunks of mana to work with.
So the dungeon core is the place where all this magic is channeled to. It distributes it to make monsters, gimmicks, or expand the dungeon. Now as the central processing unit it can either be sentient or just an automated PC.

Personally, I believe it to be a rock/ mineral based lifeform with the capability to process raw ether (mana from the atmosphere) into usable mana just like its brethren, the lightning spewing eagle and the wind rabbit.

Due to the abnormality (compared to our Earth) caused by the extra particle (or wave) known as the ether, species residing within the world have gain extra abilities such as enhanced bodily functions and access to elemental forces.

In the case of a dungeon core, I would place it closer to the house of carnivorous plants as it has the ability to distort space and even time while its base instinct is to draw in prey for food.

A Dungeon Core is, quite literally the core of a dungeon. Like the brain and soul and heart all rolled into one. Typically it controls everything in the dungeon. Expanding the chambers and passages, decorating the environment, creating the monsters and loot, consuming the mana, life force, souls, or what have you, of adventurers who explore and/or die within its territory, subsuming the power for their own use in a never-ending cycle of growth and creation. A Dungeon Core is almost like a Dungeon Master in D&D. They build the environment and encounters and so on for adventurers to challenge. They can of course have other functions, for instance in cultivation stories, few things can draw in and purify as much essence as a Dungeon Core, and they can basically function as cultivation sources for other creatures.
