Ecchi is borderline r-18 but doesn't cross the line and stays r-14 or r-16. There is no actual sexual intercourse. Everything else is the same. Don't know why it was divided. Adult, mature, smut, all of this = r-18 stories. I guess smut mainly focuses on sex scenes, and there is no violence\gore content. But adult and mature are literally the same thing. Even their descriptions on this site are the same, only worded differently.

Ok, but what if I am trying to make a story with adult themes that isn't related to sexual intercourse. Would mature be the best choice?

Yeah I'd say it is. Adult doesn't always have to mean sex in any way. You can usually replace adult with mature as well. Like "adult content" to "mature content". Both mean the same.

Don't know. However, you can put both tags. Also, if there is no sexual intercourse, no violence\gore, and no strong language you can omit these tags. Add tags like seinen\josei or\and psychological, stuff like that.

Ecchi is just having sexual innuendo without the actual sex involved. To put it into perspective, something like To Love Ru where it has so many sexual innuendos put into each chapter yet it doesn't cross into the adult section as it doesn't involve the sex scenes or just basically near sex at that point but no sex put into place.

Adult talks more into the adult stuff such as sex, murder and drugs. Most people just think its just sex but it handles all adult relating thing that an average adult would sometimes know.

Mature handles the psychological matters into context and basically describe each scenes in a mature way. Sometimes it doesn't involve adult stuff as mature handles how people grow and improve into adults. Sometimes such as talking about how adults handle mature lovelife in a very complex and understandable way a young adult would do or something like that.

Smut is basically just sex. Thats it.

In short,

Ecchi - Teenage near sex fantasy.
Adult - The Adult world in context
Mature - Psychological Maturity in humans
Smut - Sex in a nutshell

Ecchi is about the connotations and innuendos of sex. Adult is about what sex truly is. Mature is about the post nut clarity that comes after sex. Smut is about not caring about the post nut clarity that comes after sex.

One is slice of life, one is about winning the lottery, one is about growing up and the last one is just 50 shades of grey in steroids.

Smut - Sex in a nutshell

Basically this, yeah. Basically, how you think about it, "smut" is the only title that has to contain sex in order to not qualify as false advertisement. Ecchi is a tag where they talk about and hint about sex a lot, but it never actually happens. (At least not on screen.) Those are the two boarders. Smut always contains sex, Ecchi never does.

The two in the middle, "adult" and "mature" are both headings that are perfectly compatible with sexual content, but don't need sexual content. "Adult" means it's intended for an adult audience. This can mean sex, but it can also mean that it just talks about things that would interest adults a lot more than it would younger audiences. Such as, maybe a very realistic portrayal of what it's like to raise a child. This would qualify as "adult," but most likely would not have all that much sex in the story.

"Mature" means that it entertains your brain by challenging it with various concepts that are hard to tackle and require a mature mind-set. For instance, letting the scum-bag go without a beating because you realize that while giving that scum-bag the smack-down now would give a bit of momentary catharsis, it would actually not be good for you in the long run. I actually did a bit in my story where my MC made sure to yell down her best friend who was trying to protect her and in the meantime heal the guys who might be trying to kill her. She did this because her life literally depended on whether or not she could generate good optics in front of the members of the village. And, while they were not there when she was doing this, she knew stories would spread whichever choice she made.

Ecchi is foreplay.
Smut according to the definition on this site is heavily reliant on the relationship between love and sex, aimed at women. (Which surprises me.)
Adult is a legal warning that children shouldn't be reading it.
Mature is aimed at adults, but not necessarily going to get you sued if a child reads it. Like Halo.
