Over two hours. That’s how long I fucking searched for a new story. I can't do this shit anymore.

So, let me tell you what happened.

I see a cool cover with an interesting title. I click.

The story opens. I close it.

Why, you might ask?

Because the synopsis is written in the same style as the fifty before it. You can probably already guess where this is heading.

AI.

It just takes over. Don’t get me wrong, I have no issue with people using AI to refine their work. Fine, let them. But I’m so annoyed that I can’t avoid it without wasting time.

The solution is simple. RoyalRoad already has it.

An AI content warning.

Please help me to coax the admin with this.

This is a pretty unpopular opinion so I am ready for the hate, but the AI can write better than a significant portion of the writers on here. Shouldn't be using it primarily but boy oh boy could some people use it to fix up their prose a bit. :blob_hide:

Its one thing to let your writing fixed, and another to let it fill your chapers wordcount.

I would 100% much rather read shit writing by a human person than AI-generated prose. Even if it's technically sound, AI writing has such a sterile feel to it. It's never surprising or actually evocative. It's just a literary flatline the whole way through.

Shit writers, on the other hand, at least have a unique style or the beginnings of one most of the time. Shit writers have soul. When I read some handcrafted piece of shit, I go "Damn, this is absolutely terrible, but I can kinda see what they were going for". On the other hand, reading AI text is a soul-polluting slog. It's the literary equivalent of reading a tryhard LinkedIn post about productivity and increasing shareholder value or some shit.

Do let AI write your emails or cover letters though. They're supposed to lack soul.

As someone who isn’t really fluent in English anyway, grammar is my smallest problem. But what bothers me more is seeing the same word choices and combinations over and over, along with overly flowery language that even a professor wouldn’t use. I’ve read my fair share of published books, and even they don’t have this kind of over-descriptive writing.

I remember that before AI, almost no one used slashes like they do now. But ever since AI became popular, suddenly everyone is using them. I’m sure most people don’t even know what those slashes are.

It’s sad.

It indeed is. And the most sad thing of them all is... We had AI slop in trending multiple times, even 2-3 days in a row.

Imagine how much human-written stories didn't appear in trending due to it.

Big sad.

Gonna be honest with you, not sure my NTR goblin sex writings have what I would call soul. I think there are lots of arguments you can use against AI writing but the concept of artistic soul isn't one of them.

nooooo dont say that about your NTR goblin sex writings

I guess what I truly mean by soul is that AI writing generates the most generic, but also weirdly unnatural prose. It's almost like, instead of processing an idea through the brain of a human being with unique experiences and tastes, it uses algorithms to decide on which words would sufficiently fulfill a text prompt-- Oh wait,

People who love em-dashes—like me!—are really going to get accused of being AI writers all the time before long, aren't we?

Le sigh.

It annoys me because as a divergent thinker, it's really the best way for me to write on paper how my brain operates (although I suppose I could use parenthesis for it, too...)

It is just a more accurate predictive text/speech. It might make sense for 2k or so words, but eventually it just stops making sense. As for prose, it has the most generic boring prose I have read. Every time it wants to describe something it will use the same repetitive options just barely cycled enough to not use the same descriptor 3x in a paragraph. It has better grammar than most writers here, but it is so inflexible that I prefer bad grammar to AI grammar.

I disagree here, even smut authors make more sense than AI stories. As I said before AI is basically evolved predictive text, it can barely tell a comprehensible story for 2k words by itself. Also the smut author will probably have an idea for the distant future of their story, while the AI is only guessing what the most likely next word to fit with the prompt it was given. AI is a tool, nothing more. Having it write a story by itself is pretty much useless, so you can only tell a story with it if you get some guy to poke at it to do something cool. Even then it just averages out that guys idea. Fairly soulless in comparison to the smut author. Assuming you mean the soul to be the meaning behind the work.

I also use them! I've not been accused yet however, but I have a plan that if some dumb ass accuse me, I will just stream me actually writing this way.

That's a good idea. I think you all got the slashes a little wrong. For me personally, it isn’t just them but the combination.

Someone uses slashes? Okay, that’s normal.

Someone uses slashes and overly flowery words? Coincidence.

But if someone also uses synonyms that were last used in the 1800s and aren’t even taught anymore, then it starts to get suspicious.

You get what I mean, right? Right????

Why -- yes we -- are.
