The title is self-explanotory. What animals are underused in novels in your opinion?

Echidnas. No one's ever used an Echidna in novels. I mean, there's no better example of male fertility than an Echidna. Just look at its junk. It's like the Blunderbuss of animal dicks.

Typical SH user jumps to lewd even when talking about animals.

Most nonmagical animals qualify, I suppose. It's pretty rare to see even things like dogs and cats which should be everywhere. Horses are more common, I think, and only because they serve as a convenient way to make your world seem bigger. You have to ride a horse because the destination is soooo far away.

Birds occasionally show up to greet you in the mornings or to alert the party to danger, but they never just fuck around and steal your french fries, huh?

Talking cats and magic wolves are just more exciting, I guess? Speaking of wolves, ironically all the dangerous animals are quite likely to show up, and sometimes prey animals when you need food for the party... Though it's almost always either a deer or a rabbit.

Meme Answer is.......... : Mongoose, Ferret, Weasel. Magical and beastkin varients are somewhat common, but I would like to see a mundane Mongoose bully a magic snake into submission.

Tiger(Big cats(Jaguars etc.)), snake, spider, mosquito, crane, turtle (it even sounds like a sh***y JP 'I Was isekai'd with my pet turtle').

These animals are VERY common but none are frequently in fantasy novels. Imagine your character needs progress as he was being a D*** or was thinking the world was a game or whatever or he's op or you even need to show how useful his partner/slave/RI is so have him be on the verge of death from a poisonous snake bite and go semi unconscious and wake up from a antidote from the partner that's heavily wounded and tired from protecting him.

Deep-sea fishes! Jellyfishes!!! Fishes in general!
I was about to say this. There are no dolphin girls smuggled in large tanks by slave traders. No mentions of the struggles of a pregnant seahorse man. Marine life is weird but it can get even weirder.
