Underdog stories that grow to be not good.

Might be my fault for only reading underdog stories and not "strong from start". In that sense, a very specific underdog story in "very poor", "harassed by gangmembers/ elites" or "mediocre rising to top" and not "once genius now crippled" or "start with annulment".

Maybe I am trying to find something, but oftentimes once the MC broke out of the initial problem aka no longer broke, top of whole cohort or murdered entire gang, I feel a sense of "ah, issue resolved" and lose bits of my drive to continue.

Because it kind of is always the same. The "elitists" problem, the "bigger assholes ahoy" or straight up "old shit, new paint coat with minimal effort".

I like it when they might go out to see the bigger world, but at the same time, if they were taking care of someone (mother, brother or random wife-in-making), when said someone becomes non-existent for next hundreds of chapters, I would have a sense of "what's the point of all these again?"

Even when they 4th wall lean and say "for the family behind."

I would go "ok, for vague but believable ideology. Would make it more believable if I see you, the bloody someone, to pay them a visit."

End of rant.

I felt I need to let this out because of the constant disappointment recently.

Its a common problem of "plot driven" stories. A number of them need more filler, not less. When there's just event after battle after assassination and no downtime in between, you start to feel like you are reading an accounting log instead of something fun.

Yeah, it is only recently that I really like downtime.

But I have also seen poorly done downtimes that are in the realm of "pointless" than mundane. Sure, you can tell me about how your murderhobo just went to the fishmarket with his GF to prepare sashimi, but unless you can make the trip at least engaging, you don't have to go to every details.

I love those underdog stories too. Nowadays I tend to prefer the slice of life/heartwarming modern rebirth without drama though as the ones with underdog get butchered with one sidedness.

It’s horrible how they had such a great built up to overcome the initial problem and then the story drags on for 1000+ chapters and the initial setup is gone to the end of the universe never to be found again.

Also hate how fast they got OP. The cheekiness that was cool when they were the underdog just feels nauseating. They got no real character development.
