I'm looking for novels about ancient southeast asia before they became victims of colonization of various european powers. Possibly showcasing their culture.

:blob_melt: Fair enough, but I think they already advanced well beyond simplistic structures like tribes and chieftains.

We were mostly doing fishing and trading with other secluded villages. We had one Ketua Kampung and that's it.

You want that kind of stuff? Then I think you need to know this first. I copied it from the other posts.

[[Well, based on what I know in history. Datus and Rajas was the time when women didn't have clothes or bra, their breasts were visible, as for the lower part, I think it's cover? Not sure.

Men had clothes that are covering their private parts except that, they were basically naked. Do you really want to live like that, yeah it's like an everyday nudist life? (Almost). I'm from Southeast so I know some basic info. Oh and they had a lot of tattoos, the warriors tattooed their bodies every time they killed people. The more you killed, the more tattoo you had.]]

No kingdoms and state like structures? Really? ? You can't be serious.
We had Sultans and royalties but they mostly only start sprouting out when the trading started around the peninsulas. For the most part, the sultans didn't do any major Crusade type shit. They hung onto their lands and everyone else were pretty much dealing with themselves, either doing fishing or plowing them fields. It's not rare to find a secluded village that didn't even know there's some guy east that owned the land with a castle. Rarely did anyone get caught up politically within the country. It is only outside factors that really stirred shit, like when the Dutch came and set up shop, or the Portuguese, which were REALLY not friendly when they came.

:blob_melt: That sounds already better than fishing and secluded villages.
I don't know about elsewhere in SouthEast Asia, but the general area of Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, and Lao progressed at the same speed as China. They had fairly advanced messaging systems, (at least for their period) and like China, had walled settlements dating back at LEAST from the 8th century B.C.
Hell Vietnames first known royal dynasty was in the 9th century B.C.

And hell, the Funan, Chenla, and even the Khmer Empire were well before Europeans who only showed up near the end of the Khmer Empire.

Same according to my knowledge, but maybe most people talk only about the area of Indonesia when they mean South East Asia and exclude Indochina. ?

I don't even consider Indonesia. Always thought Vietnam, Cambodia, and Thailand were their more important cultural centers. Laos less so Though admittedly, my South East Asia history is spotty when it comes to cultural/religious things. I kept up more with the politics and warfare since I only went through the general stuff for the SouthEast

Most of my History studies in the area were East Asian in uni.
