Now I think I'm nowhere near to it as of yet, but if and when it happens, how do I know that my story made it into trending? Do I have to check all the pages and categories or will I receive some kind of notification?

You have to check it manually after seeing the increase.
Also, since you are new, let me add that the daily trending seems to take in account the increase from the day before, with a lag of one day.
lets say you get 100 views per day
15th oct- 100 views
16th oct -800 views
No matter how you do at 17th, you will get trending at 18th.
At least, that's what I managed to understand from my data.

*gasp* The secret formula has been revealed!
Of course, I think there are more factors involved. For one, I am very sure that the algorithm is weighted down by total views, but I have been unable to prove (to myself) if the recent trendline is also a factor.
Well, for new stories, its mostly irrelevant. Only thing you need to do to get to trending is to post 3 times a day once, and you will be at trending.
