Ever think of that one character with one hell of a life? Basically, they are abused, abandoned, betrayed, neglected and suffered so much but they still keep smiling? Why would they do that? I think I understand now.

They are already dead inside.

A dying character usually smiles at another as they die, indicating that they already welcomed their death. The mind has accepted death as a release. It just takes the body longer to die.

Assuming they don't live long enough to become unhinged, of course.

I would agree with all accept the part of them being dead inside. Maybe they found meaning, or latched onto a purpose that they can't explain in words. There's also the psychological aspect of it as it has been proven that those who come from abusive/broken homes are kinder and more empathetic due to a subconscious desire for the world to be less painful for both themselves and others. There's also the coping defense where your brain releases chemicals when you are in pain to make you feel better. For those that are in constant physical and emotional pain due to trauma and abuse, their brain can either release chemicals to counteract the pain, or will be so used to it that it has to constantly release those chemicals in order to keep up. This is especially true for those who's brains lack the ability to comprehend trauma as a defense mechanism, like myself.

I think they are simply fictional characters that have little basis in reality or nihilistic ones. Perhaps they were born a masochist and loved the abuse and torture?

I mean, being born with a specific orientation is the prevalent theory today.

This is how someone can become a masochist.

Nature vs nurture. You either born a masochist or become one.

I think they are simply fictional characters that have little basis in reality.
Indeed, such people typically are not very smart:
I think the appeal of such characters is that they've beaten the odds. Despite all the factors working against them, they've managed to become a functional human. It shows that they can get through anything life throws at them.
