I don't have the time to consistently post chapters so I've decided to build a fan base by turning prompts into stories of a couple chapter. Does this sound like a good idea.

Go for it, but just know that if you post on SH they will be hidden from the main page. Collections of short stories won't be promoted

sounds good, though probably will never reach the same popularity as a long-running series with consistent updates

Absolutely right. Shorts won't gain in popularity unless the author is already popular themselves.
I'm looking at having about 200 views after 2 months of posting my short as a new author. I'd actually call that successful because it got read at all and had 1 person asking for more (which I'm working on one and have ideas for other shorts).

Eventually, I might take all of these and try to develop a long-form story to put everything together. For now, I'm just happy writing shorts that rick-roll people and make everyone lose The Game (which everyone just lost, you're welcome).

Although I'm still a little confused about this, it seems Collections actually don't get shadowbanned. Additionally, you can always post each story as a oneshot even if they do.

The only qualifications are that the stories have to be 'stories'. In other words, it can't just be an idea for a story and it needs a plot to carry it from beginning to end.

I'd say it's actually a good idea. Having a more diverse set of stories has a higher chance of catching attention from different readers than a single niche story. Whether they'll stick around to read more is another matter... But you could always employ both tactics.

Maybe write a short story and a chapter of an ongoing story once a week each.
