Well folks, It's official. I'm burnt out. Not on writing. I took a week away while my mom was visiting, and that reminded me of something. I used to love writing. I enjoyed watching pages fill with words. But now? Now, I almost dread it. It's a hassle to sit and hammer out a handful of pages.

So, I'm shifting gears. No longer shall I be John Owl, the smut peddler. But my question remains - Should I remain on this account or should I create a new one for my clean works to be fully separated? It's a pain to grow on here and I have a decent readerbase as is, but... If I should ever publish, I don't necessarily want my new books connected to my smut works. And this is doubly bad because I might dabble in smut again in the future, but for now, I'm taking a step back from it.

So... anyone have any input or thoughts on the matter?

Changing gears? Don't change, dial it up. Fuck changing gears. Gear it up! You make smut? Then make even crazier smut! You need variety? Change your type of smut. If you normally make romantic smut, switch to sci fi interspecies smut, all-demon smut, yandeloid smut, mountain-climbing smut or inanimate smut. The smutty possibilities are endless!

Nobody said you can't have smut in the middle of a car chase, for example:

"Sharon, give me the 3rd gear!"

"Yes, oh yes!"

"They're getting closer, 4th gear, Sharon!"

"Ahhh, ahhhhnn, I'm getting closer too!"

"Come on, Sharon, they're catching up! Fifth gear!"

"Yes! I'm cominggggggg!!!"

I'm not a fan of smut, but I'd read THAT one.

lol I might eventually. But I'm going to take a step back and get back to my roots. Write a clean story (at least, 99% clean. Might have around 1% light eroticism. focus more on the couple and less on the acts or bodies).

I'm taking a step back from it.
Can I just state that even if you don't end up writing more smut, thank you for completing "Lay the Dragon" and "Dragon Bound." Few are the authors talented enough to give their stories an ending, most are addicted to leaving stuff in infinite hiatus. 10/10 author, regardless of genre.

Hey John_Owl,

On your question about creating an alt account for your SFW books, it has advantages and disadvantages. The most significant disadvantage is getting your diehard readers to move over to the new account, while the advantage of starting a new account gives you a clean slate.

Regardless, publishing NSFW novels like Fourth Wing somehow pulls in an audience. And that shit has some "passion" to it that millennial women love. I only know about it thanks to Papa Meat's channel making fun of it. So, writing smut isn't the thing that is holding you back from getting readers.

Anyway, I think I know what is keeping you from getting an audience and I can give you a blunt critique if you want. Because I feel that even if you write safer content, you might still struggle to gain an audience from what I've read of your work.

Hope that helps and best of luck, former fellow Smut author.

I'm up for critique, if you wanted to send me a message. But having readers wasn't the primary reason I took a step back and reevaluated. I just realized I wasn't happy writing anymore. I used to have a passion, a fire for writing that I honestly miss. And starting my current work has helped reignite that.

Gotcha.

I thought one of main factors of your burnout was caused by lack of growth.

If you still want me to send a critique. Holler at me with a personal DM.

Best of luck
