Hello, hello!

Thanks to a convo in Discord, I had a small idea I wanted to share.

I suck at creating names. I know many of us do. I know there are many many name generators out there, but sometimes, they don't really fit what we have in mind. So I thought, why not share and give away names or characters to others?

So I created this spreadsheet, Shared Names Project. Anyone can go and add as many names of character they want. Anyone can take the names and characters they want. Just don't forget to give credits when it happens.

Hope it will help those who need it!

Cheers!

I also write scripts, I would suggest two things, one behindthename.com, and also if interested in writing scripts, the software which is free, Trelby, has a great name generator by location, at least to spark some ideas.

I thought I'd comment about name generation for stories.

When writing, sometimes you get stuck on small details like naming characters and in the flow of the moment, you can't seem to come up with a good idea for character names (in this instance). Just remember, you are the author and you are the one in control of the narrative you are creating. Until you publish your story, you literally have carte blanche on what happens in your story. Being an author is one of the ways humans have to feel 'godlike'. It's kind of heady when you think about it. \o/

So, feel free to temporarily name a character until a better name comes out from the narrative or the character you are trying to create. Maybe the first name that comes to mind will turn out to be the name that character was meant to have.

Trust in yourself.

Good luck with your writing!

I.. Usually just purposely make typos so the name sounds more fantasy like. For example, daisy can become daust?
Edit: i just opened the sheet, is the second line purposely made like that?

Just want to add. If you have no idea what to name your character or wants to give a unique name, try out Ai-chan's Syllable-based Name Generator here https://forum.scribblehub.com/threads/author-tools.22/

It allows you to use syllables to create completely random and unthinkable names. You can then modify the generated names into something that sounds good. For example:

1) Two Syllables
a) Hoku - Can be used as is, in Japanese, it's written as 北 (north). Or if you want to make it sound European, you can change it into Horku.
b) Kiri - Can be used as is, or changed to suit your setting. In Japanese, it can be written as 霧 (fog).

2) Three Syllables
a) Heiha - Can be used as is or changed to suit your setting.

3) Four Syllables
a) Aninaha - Can be used as a given name or separated into two parts, Ani Naha. Sounds tribal, don't you think?

4) Five Syllables
a) Hishimihina - Apparently, there is an actress by the name of Hishimi Yuriko, so someone being named Hishimi Hina is quite possible. Or you can split the name following the best match for your setting.

Ai-chan wanted to include meaningful names too, but Ai-chan has been way too busy that Ai-chan doesn't have time to update the generator.
