We almost never talk about the one thing that actually makes our stories sound like us: voice.

Have you ever wondered how your scene might read if rewritten by another author?

I have, constantly. Especially after being exposed to, and made aware of, a certain distinct voice from a particular statistical model deluding some people into thinking it has intelligence.

The prompt:

One writer submits an excerpt or a chapter. Yes, that’s the prompt.

The rest of us, or anyone interested, take a stab at rewriting it in our own voice.

Guidelines:

Keep your rewrite within 600 words.

If the prompt is a long chapter, you may choose a section of it to rewrite.

Participants have 2 days to submit their version.

After the time limit ends, the next round begins with a new prompt.

So what’s in it for you?

The original author gets to see their work through different lenses/perspectives/craft approaches. This might be helpful for new authors who are interested in how their scenes are envisioned by more experienced writers.

Everyone else gets to flex their range and challenge themselves by thinking critically about a piece of work.

If someone decides to cheat using that particular statistical model, take it as a learning opportunity to recognize one when it slaps you in the face.

Bonus:

The winner of each round, decided by me, will be given 5 stars for a novel of their choice.

“The Ashen chapel was once a beautiful monument of the Pitt,” Aegis let out a breath and prepared himself. He rubbed his palms as the coldness brushed his skin. “Citizens of the Pitt showed their gratitude to the Arch Devil Vorax— the lord of hunger, greed, and glory.”

“Every single creature in Inanitas— Fiends, cambions, and corrupted paid tribute with gold to the Arch Devil for granting them life and ambition.” The champion leaned in as Aegis continued.

“Unti—” before he could finish the word—

“Mistake…” A chill ran down his spine, and colour drained from his face. The night felt colder than usual. Aegis looked over his shoulder.
Nothing.
A knot formed in his stomach as he expected something.
But the sight of drifting fog and a deserted alley only gave him chills. Slowly, he turned back.
However, the stranger’s gaze pierced him.

Aegis swallowed.
The fog surrounding them thickened. As the faint whispers now grew louder.
Aegis slowly moved away from the stranger. His back now touched the wall behind him.
Yet the stranger’s gaze was fixed on him. His eyes grew pale as his knuckles whitened.
What did I do…
He moved his hand in the air, but the stranger did not react.
Then he realised the stranger was not looking at him. His gaze was fixed on something that loomed behind him.

“Sir?” The stranger did not react. Instead, his jaw tightened. Aegis shook the stranger’s arm, “SIR!” The stranger’s body flinched as he turned his face toward Aegis, and the emerald green colour returned to his eyes.

Two crescents loomed above them, casting a faint blue light. Silence surrounded them as no words were exchanged. Aegis’s gaze darted across the alley.

Something moved in the corner of his eye. A pale, lifeless green glow darted across. The glow did not vanish immediately; instead, it lingered. The fog shifted toward the glow.

“Sir…” he whispered. Sweat rolled on his forehead.

The glow flickered once, twice, and it stopped...
The alley felt narrower.
The walls are taller. The distance between them and the street behind suddenly seemed too far. Aegis swallowed. His tongue felt dry.

Something scraped stone. Soft. He did not blink.
What if it gets closer?
For a heartbeat, it resembled a rat.

Then it stood up.

Silence swallowed the alley. The stray hounds stopped barking.
Aegis’s fingers curled into his palms.

A faint squeak reached his ears.
Kluck! He moved a little closer to the stranger.

“Let’s leave, sir…I plead!” He leaned closer to the stranger and whispered.

Chapter 29- Truth!
As we made our way to the Warehouse District, i decided that Alice needed to know the truth, she DESERVED to know.

"Alice, there is somthing i need to tell you, but i'm afraid you won't believe me." i said.

"Girl, we live in world where monsters come out of portals and people can transform into beasts, Try Me." Alice spoke.

And so, i explained everything, how i died in a previous life, but the powers of a Time Golem brought me back to the day me and Stella awakened.

Alice, took it wel....

"That egomanical bitch! what monster kills the person that did nothing but help them?" Alice spat.

"Stella was always one to put herself first..." i said.

Alice picked up on this, "Look Roxy, this was NOT your fault, how the fuck would you know that Stella was ploting to kill you, you ain't got ESP!"

"I thought if i broke up with Stella, things would get better, and they did, i met you, and you were the best choice i made ever since i was brought back."

We share a kiss, and continued foward until we found me and Stella's old hangout, Stella owned this particular warehouse, in my past life, i would bring Stella Golden Cores and Elemental cores to help her get stronger.

Once inside, we found Mom, tied to a support beam.

"Roxy! Alice!" cried Mom.

Before we could get to her, the warehouse door slammed shut, and out came Stella, with her were two other girls, mostl likely street thugs.

"Here we are Roxy, tell me, this place bring back memories?" Stella asked, "Any feelings?"

"Yes, disgust, anger, self-loathing, stop me when i get to somthing you like." i replied, "Why are you doing this?"

"Why? because you are MINE! i was the only girl that actually wanted to be near you!" Stella snapped.

"Bullshit!" Alice snapped back, "I can name 20 girls off the back of my hands that would love to be with Roxy, you just got to her first."

"I protected you, kept the creeps and scum away from you!" Stella replied.

"You PAID them to leave me alone.." I fired back, "And if i remember, all i was to you was a servant at best, a TOY at worst!"

"And what's wrong with that! to be my plaything was an honnor!" Stella explained.

"You really don't fucking get it, I wanted Love, not Slavery!" i roared, "i gave you my heart and all you did was crush it, smash it, and gave it back to me, expecting a thank you! now i finally found the right person to give my heart to, and you can't handle it?"

"Because you belong to me! do you know who i am? i'm Stella Wester! and i always get what i want!" she roared, hot tears streaming down her face.

And that's when it finally hit me, "You were given everything you ever wanted, or screamed for, nobody ever said "NO" to you, or rejected you, have they?"

Stella looked at me, her tears still flowing from her eyes, i approached her and spoke softly.

"I'm sorry Stella, really i am, but what we had wasn't healthy, I love Alice, we bring out the best in each other, but i'm sure you will find love one day..."

"SHUT UP!"

Me and Alice stepped back! Stella looked like she had finally lost her mind.

"If i can't have you, No one will!" Stella screamed as she took out a body of whiskey and poured it all over herself, than, with a lit match, set herself and the entire warehouse on fire!

Alice and i transformed, untied Mom, and escaped the burning warehouse, just as the police arrived.

Mom explained everything to the cops, while EMS was hauling Stella's charred body, the flames had consumed her, resulting in her death.

As the corpse was being ushered into the Ambulance, Alice held me tight.

"I wish...i could have been her friend..." i said.

"Roxy, Stella was fucked up in the head before she even met you." Alice said, and with that, we drove Mom back home...
Chapter 29- END.
