Throwing an idea here. Was listening to Sub Urban. Also reminded a bit of the intro from A Drop of Your Blood.

Ain't it sad that even when the good have fallen and long forgotten, the darkness still yet remains?

Eons ago, he was the protector of the mortal realm. Respected, revered...he was omnipotent. But somewhere along the way, his power dwindled, rendering him in every way a mere mortal, save for eternal life. He watched as those he stood with passed away, one by one, while traces of his foes still remained. Slowly, time began to corrode his existence as well. Hallucinations of the past, shattering migraines, gnawing pains, his sanity...

Tempted to reclaim his power, he plans to unseal an artifact left from long ago. A piece of his power was left by mistake in the concealment of a demonic beast. Perhaps it could restore him a shred of his former glory. But the power is tainted, and the monster still lurks within the seal, waiting for a chance to break free.

Would it restore his sanity or corrupt him even more?

Most likely the latter. The beast would offer power to avenge his former self. It would eat his enemies, ultimately getting stronger. And whatever pantheon or realm would crumble or be devoured.
