If someone achieves a black belt in a martial art but then eventually stops training and let's themselves go, can no longer do a roundhouse, becomes fat etc., are they still considered a black belt in their discipline?

Or is it an ongoing process?

Being a black belt isn’t an exact science, martial arts doesn’t have a governing body like something like gymnastics does. As such it’s different from studio to studio. There are places that cater towards kids, where you will see young preteen kids with black belts because they have been doing lessons for a long while, that wouldn’t be the same black belt as someone who went to a hardcore bjj dojo that doesn’t accept anyone below the age of 18 for insurance reasons. I could find it reasonable that certain hardcore clubs would revoke your status if you fell out of practice, but I’ve never done any belt based martial arts at that level.

For example the actor Dan Aykroyd claims to have 7 different black belts, and he’s a fat doofus who knows near nothing about martial arts.

Sometimes 'martial arts' falls flat on its face. Way to many McDojos out there that give out black belts.

Start boxing, do MMA, Krav Maga, or actual wrestling techniques because so many fights end up in grapples. If you want to learn self defense.

Or if you actually are afraid for your life and and don't want to die in a mugging, get a gun.

Btw in some martial arts, a black belt isn't the best. Also, it depends on where you got your belt.

Some? Try, just about all.

It is the philosophy of most martial arts disciplines that, when you get your black belt, you are told "now you are a beginner."

In other words, all the efforts to go through the color belts are just building your foundation and teaching you the basics. You aren't even considered a beginner at the martial art until you hit black belt.

The number of ranks after black belt varies from style to style. Most are 9 or 10 levels (counting the 1st rank when you just get your black belt as 1.) I have also seen one that has 15 black-belt level ranks.

Then, there are also some that just have a single black belt rank, but it's generally understood who's more skilled among the black belt students.

(BTW, I've been in the martial arts since I was 7. So, I'm pretty thick in the culture of it.)

:blob_unsure: I didn't say a thing about ranks. I only mentioned belts.

Once a black belt pretty much always a black belt, most of the time. It is more about the training and knowledge then actual "combat' power, especially if you can pass on your knowledge.

Yeah, this is true for the large majority of martial arts dojos you will find out there. Especially in the west. In the west, I would say well over 90% of all dojos are teaching complete BS. I suppose it might be a decent physical work-out, but it's worthless in an actual fight.

If you can't go with something real like a BJJ, Krav Maga or find something really authentic out there, your best bet would be to go with Tae-Kwon-Do. TKD is still crap in a fight, but at the very least they spar a lot, and sparring is something that has some serious value to it. Sparring teaches you to move under pressure, and some of the more authentic traditional styles tend to skimp on the sparring end a bit. So, it's good to have that in your background to compensate for that fact.

TKD is also a better physical work-out than the other martial styles and works a lot on your lower body strength which always translates well to other styles. Both of these things will serve you very well later on if you manage to find a dojo to teach you some REAL martial arts after you've managed to do some more research.

And it ends up being like a philosophy degree when someone decides to pull out a Glock.

It's for life. Almost all my senseis were out of shape af.

LOL.

My sensei is overweight and has a bad back. He spends most of our lessons sitting in a chair.

PS. I'm reading Hunting For Jade Beauties. It's pretty good so far.

Or train your cardio through jogging, then practice running, sprinting, and dodging... Just a suggestion... I am very sure this will be a big help during a zombie apocalypse.
