Quality Beta Readers

How do authors find beta readers that give valuable feedback? As an amateur author, I find I can get really ignorant to the holes in my own writing. I feel like beta readers would be very useful. Do authors just get popular enough that people volunteer?

Some people ask internet friends (very rarely real world friends) to be beta readers - I've been asked four times, accepted twice and was useful one of those times (the other time life got in the way and, by the time I was free to read it, he'd revised it twice).

If you recruit an alpha reader, they will bring a whole pack of betas with them.
Otherwise, ask your existing readers.
