Publishing your chapters on the go without rewriting?

Do you publish your chapters on the go, or do you finish your novel first, rewrite it, and publish it afterward? I decided to do the former, but it's scary and crippling (but fun). Any thoughts or tips on this one?

Different ways of publishing suit different types of novels. The way to cure your perfectionism was discussed in one of the previous threads, I think? Set a strict limit to the number of edits and rewrites.

I write, write, write and let it go, it's best to edit at the very end when you know the feel you want to pass through the different chapters or with the entire plot in your mind.

I did the former but then my imagination of the world in my novel expanded so I’m currently rewriting all my chapters… :blob_catflip:

Write the chapter, rewrite it, and publish. Writing the whole novel is definitely better but I don't have the patience nor discipline for it.

Post first on patreon (basically unedited)

Once I post on scribblehub I do a light line edit. I write... decently cleanly so usually I don't go back and rewrite. It's a webnovel not a novel I'm not trying to get published here.

Ideally, it's a good idea to make a backlog (20-30 chapters worth of 70k words) and release each chapter daily. I've heard people that do this write one chapter one day, edit one the next, and so on until they reach their current chapters.

But I didn't practice what I preached back then and instead wrote and published immediately as I went along. As much as I like writing, I'm not a fast writer so I sometimes felt overwhelmed by tight, rigid deadlines leaving me little time for other hobbies outside of my 9-5 daytime job. I tried aiming for Friday releases at a set time, but I've had varying results with it so I might just go back to writing, immediate editing, and immediate releasing as I did at the onset of writing.

What is rewriting? Is it tasty?

I'm a complete hack, so I don't really care about editing much, since the quality of the story matches the quality of the writing. Which is of course impeccable.

If I did that without any rewrites. All that chapter would be gibberish to anyone else but me.

More or less my first attempt at writing anything.

So nah.. Ive learnt my lesson on my attempts at fanfiction.

I plan the general progression of the entire story, incuding some of the major events. Then go more in-depth for "current arc" and 2-3 Arcs ahead. But when I start actually writing the chapters I usuall do it 'free-form' untill I feel satisfied with it. Re-reading every sentence as I write it and maybe read it over once at the end, save and done.

I edit a fuck-ton. Actually, I'm talking with someone about doing the editing for me now that I have a baby in my arms most of the day.

I write, I edit, I publish on Patreon, then I edit again when ppl report mistakes, then before public release I edit whole thing again, then I publish on SH and other sites, then I edit when people report mistakes. EZ. Oh, and then I edit everything again when preparing it for ebook version.

I write chapters, edit, continue until I finish my novel, edit a lot more, publish, edit again.

What is the point of leaving past works in crappy quality while you get better? I don't see it.

I will always go back and edit if it is something I can fix. After all, I don't mind reading my story 20x times if I need to. I like it and enjoy it.

Sadly, I don't get the writers that say, I won't reread my story to fix mistakes. Most say it is boring. So what? If you find your story boring, then what do you think others will do.

I do this as a hobby and enjoy improving. Heck, I have improved these past months more than I ever had before I published.

Writing is a passion for me. And these readers I get are amazing enough to help me improve. They are the best and for them, I would rewrite my story! So they can get the best quality I can provide.

And that is far from perfect. But I strive for the best I can provide. Thus, I rewrite it tons of times.

I publish my chapters once I finish an entire volume because I patch up plot holes/inconsistencies before release.

Also builds up backlogs in which I can rest before writing another volume/book.

My current story I just write as I go: I literally have no backlog. Knowing that, I'll probably have an entire volume of backlog for my more serious novels.

Personally I do a little bit of a mix.
Firstly I review my chapters several times and even ask a couple of people to read them before posting them, that prevents the most basic errors from happening and it gives me a rough idea on what I should change/improve.

Regarding the reviews itself, I've come to notice that I work better with volumes/arcs (whatever you want to call it).
What I basically do is divide the story in volumes and every time I finish one, I read it fully and review it, changing whatever I might see fit.
This is important because as you write, your style develops and thus you should return to your earlier chapters to improve them and mantain the coherence between the whole book.
But it's up to you to check which style suits you better! :blob_gift: :blobtaco:

I write by arcs and I try to write the entire arc before I start to publish but I publish faster than I write since I'm posting 2 stories at the moment. I'm going to run out of backlog on one story pretty soon so I'm gonna have to binge write a bit. I don't have to do as much editing since I plan out the entire arc and major details before I begin to write so my chapters come out pretty clean the first time and I generally don't have to go back and edit for anything more than grammar.... of course in a few months I might cringe at what I post now
