It has come into my attention that there's been increasing amounts of animosity towards harems. Such behaviour is unacceptable and unbecoming, yet it is being encouraged, celebrated even.

Harems are being dubbed as 'immature' and 'low-quality'. That cannot be further from the truth. It is not the art but the artist.

This hateful act of defamation is spread by those with hateful hearts. They advocate for progressivness yet practice prejudice. This has to be stopped.

I concede that it would technically be possible to write an objectively good harem story. A writer could come up with a story that utilises harems in an insightful and meaningful way, rather than just as some form of popularity fan-service coupled with being an easy (and poor) way to develop every female character in the book. Which, by the way, most of the characters are. Because harem stories always seem to have more female characters than male characters in them.

Such a story would probably have to be heavily based on drama, however, and I don't read much of the drama genre anyway. (or perhaps as a satire? I guess anything is possible in a satire, so a harem story done specifically to mock harem stories might be an interesting read? At the same time, one would have to be careful that this becomes actually funny, and not just another trash harem story itself.)

As such, I shall continue to look down on the harem genre, in the hopes that the citizens of scribblehub -nay, the world- learn how to utilize it properly.

It doesn't need drama. Harem members could easily be friends and lovers of each other. Not everything needs to be about conflict. :blob_hmm:

I feel the bias and discrimination. But, even though I do get pissed at the immediate judgment, it's not like I can do something about it. And honestly, it's discouraging to see even the closest friends of yours air their hate on the genre you're writing about. Nevertheless, it's the human 'mind'; all that I can do is 'do my research/assignments' and write the best I can give in the hopes that I can turn others' minds.

Otherwise, I'll just stay silent. I've been full of toxicity lately.

The problems with bad harems I normally see is that it kills character growth and progression in favor of a "gonna catch them all" mentality. MC party needs a healer? Throw a harem ball at a healer waifumon.

Most problems in those badly written stories are either solved by adding harem members or by overpowering the MC instead of struggling or interpersonell character growth.

This leads to everyone but the main six waifumon being underdeveloped because they got banked in Boxes 1 to 5.

And most conflict the reader will ever get is that one or more characters (don't) want the harem or just (don't) want the MC for themselves or a pissing contest about who loves the MC more until it ends in an orgy...

I'm not saying there aren't good stories, but the genre is so oversaturated that most people are already pissed when they see it.
