Syphilis, the pox, any disease, really. Beyond that, the decisions of the past still make for the opinions of today.

My opinion, take the best approach for your world, and decide if the choices of fashion are a result of in-world events or if they are in spite of such. A good example from the first book in the Wheel Of Time series was when the main character was offered a choice as to how to peace-bind his sword, and which color to have as the bond.
