Someone brought up a good question in my first draft that despite the name, there were no real Power Rangers involved. My fixation on story aspects made me forget about that and left the protagonist as someone who only looks the part.

I like the ‘Lackey becomes a Hero’ plot line so I guess I’ll have to keep that while trying to retain the power ranger aspect. Make it so the lackey primarily fights Power Rangers and is defeated (similar to Loser Ranger), while having the Saintess character be a Sixth Ranger of sorts.

In the sequel I made a Magical Girl team that was an experiment by a priest who calls himself Mr Mascot… The main character is a Mysterious Protector type trope. Because of the differences between the show types there will probably have to be a lot to be worked on.

The first thing I’d have to remember is that Power Rangers usually have a base of operations unlike Magical Girls (who just get together when necessary). There is sometimes a helper character that stays at the base to give advice and wisdom, or to keep the team focused.

I never watched Super Sentai but I’m familiar enough with the concept. Power Rangers beat the villain of the week with more violent sellable toys and they’re usually the more traditional hero archetypes. Normally doing good to do good.

I thought of doing something like Red Ranger In Another World but that’s already done. Moreover I might have to look up plot devices, but I can’t remember what were the themes behind why the Power Rangers were the way they were.

Magical Girls are more about empathy and beating darkness with love cheesy stuff, but I can’t remember what was the general baseline for Power Ranger stories. Like what they stood for besides stopping the bad guy at the moment.

Power Rangers has so many storylines that it’s hard to narrow down what exactly makes them heroes besides the fact that they beat evildoers destroying cities.

Anyone got any ideas what becoming a Power Ranger is all about besides the abilities?

Well, the Sentai Rangers have a LOOONG history that goes back ... well, before the first true Sentail Rangers stories, back to the days of Ultra X (kind of an X-Files for kids, only about 30-some years earlier), which "cross-pollinated" with Godzilla to produce Ultraman, the first of the "Effects Shows" to gain international attention. Outside of Asia, (thanks primarily to the efforts of Haim Saban) the Sentai Rangers have eclipsed the Giants of Light (Ultraman) Franchise, but in Japan and the Pacific Rim the two were, last I checked, pretty close in popularity.
Typically a person who was a "good guy in a bad situation" is chosen to gain power - the first Ultraman (Zoffy/Ultraman 66) was a pilot who tracked unusual phenomena for a government agency; he was tracking an alien incursion when a sort of police officer from M-78 crashed into him and, in order to save his life, merged their essences creating Uratroroman (Ultraman); I have not seen it, but I believe Kamen Raider, sometimes considered the first true Sentai Ranger, had a similar event.
So the person chosen is someone in an adventurous lifestyle (some have been Indiana-Jones-like archeologists, police, teachers.... though the parody Ultraman, Zearth, was a gas station attendant) who has a "good heart" and is not afraid to encounter the unknown. Someone driven by either curiosity or the desire to help others (or both) - and it helps if they're a bit of an adrenaline junkie.

Power Rangers to my knowledge are people who are like the basic kit heroes(pure of heart, gifted in fighting, and a knack to fight for all that is beautiful in the world even in the face of endless despair). Other characteristics of them are just personalities added to that basic heroic stuff, each with their own backstories and how they compliment or conflict in the team.

The Red is the leader and sole glue to the team, blue is the smart one(?), pink is the girl and the rest are either to add flavor or trouble to the group.

Its been a long time for my nerd knowledge to recall most of what I know since I mostly watch it because of the transformation and the mechas.

Oh, so it’s like an Everyman getting the chance to do good against evil. It reminds me that Power Rangers has quite the black and white morality to justify how badly they beat their foes. Reminds me how Loser Rangers also parodies that in a way. I’ve seen the shows when the lackeys are usually created from evil while the main villains can be complicated beyond that.

Same. Loved this and Transformers. Mechs are so cool.
