Vinland Saga somewhat fits. The MC basically got raised by a band of viking mercenaries with the goal of killing their leader as revenge after killing his father. MC then became a pacifist with the goal of venturing to vinland after the war. Story had a massive dip in quality after the start of the eastern expedition arc tho. Basically the manga/anime peaked at volume 13/season 2.
