Is it generally acceptable to use the OSRIC spells and magic system in a book? It is open source, but I'm wondering what peoples thoughts are on it? My main concern would be tripping any weird copyright.

In general, if the terms appear in multiple games, they're acceptable as long as you don't copy spell descriptions verbatim. And some spell names vary from system to system (Magic Missile is recognizable but definitely mechanically different between HackMaster current edition, Advanced Dungeons & Dragons 1e or 2e. or the post-Hasbro takeover of the Dungeons and Dragons brand) so are safe.
Now, if you want to use the Tunnels and Trolls name for Magic Missile ("Take That You Fiend" or TTYF), you should get their permission IF you plan to make any income off of your work.

So... if you're just posting it free and not trying to get money of any sort, you can PROBABLY even use the full game details, but if you are trying to make money off of it, whether through KoFi or Patreon or, eventually through KDP or something, you should consult the company that owns the game and get their permission (or create your own "close enough" spells).
