The genre where the pay to win users get beaten by the power of luck and plot armor.

I would love to see a card game anime where logic and psychology is actually implemented and not just plot convinent pulled from somewhere.

while solving conflicts through card games is inherntly gonna require some plot contrivances the games are fun to watch and are good at showing what the characters are about though their decks and strategy

Having watched like three different versions of WIXOSS, the anime and fighting is fun, I guess. but strategy? are you kidding. Every single one of these animes just ASS PULLS. "Ha! you may have fire discs and a nuclear bomb. but my fairy can nullify that, and turn your bomb into flowers! Card Face down. Finish Turn!"

Me: "Dafuq?"

Yeah For example Traptrix in yu-gi-oh is a deck made for trap cards so the player can keep summoning them

Blue Eyes decks focus on getting out Blue-Eyes no matter What

Raidraptor and Blackwing are all about just Swarming the oppoment

Like Yu-gi-oh or Battle spirits that sorta stuff
Well, which Yu-gi-oh? GX, 5D's, what? Because those will determine my opinions. I really liked Yu-gi-oh 5D's because I thought the plot was more interesting than the entire "card game anime" thing, but undoubtedly, that is still a card game anime.

As for other card game anime, such as Cardfight!! Vanguard, or Future Card Buddyfight, I find them to be plain. Very plain. It's quite literally just revolving around the card game, not the plot.

My overall opinion on such anime is that they produce tons of episodes and can last you a while. I think most of the ones I've ever watched were ~50 per season. As such, one should dive into them with the mindest of, "This doesn't replace my favorite xxxxxx, but it will serve as entertainment until I find a new anime to watch."

I love them. I watched Yugioh, Shadowverse, Vanguard, and WIXOSS.

I actually liked WIXOSS (the first generation) the least because it barely taught me anything about the game and I barely understood anything. If they wanted to pull a Madoka then don't do it in the form of a game they have no intention of teaching the audience.

Same with Vanguard's V-series reboot. Things just felt so "formal" or rushed, lifeless compared to OG Vanguard all the way to G-era (GZ's my favorite season)

I feel I enjoy a card game anime if it's the type to actively sell me the game. As in show the units and have them come out in summoning animations so grand or with a Latin choir or something. Or tie most of the drama and have them flow through the turns of a game. Just something to make the moment seem big and possible for me to have everything sink in.

6:14 here is a good example from Vanguard GZ

You just feel the impact with the music, the voice acting, and all that where even if you didn't know anything about the game, you know shit's gone down.

Then you add the 8:14 where protag girl survives the turn due to the week's new reveal (which takes the form of her dead boyfriend's ace card). Then she wins next turn with that rock music blaring.

One of my favorite of many great moments in that season, and this got goosebumps out of me.

I think what Gogo means is that it's great if said deck has an in-universe thing of landing on the types of people they do. Like it's great for Kaiba to have the Blue-eyes cards because they represent the power-hungry personality, but they went further and added the whole Kisara thing which made it even better.

Or to build a character's arc and development around his deck choice or ace cards that reflect part of his personality.

Maybe have the calm genius character play a technical deck but as the story goes on and he inevitably starta jobbing, he starts debuting new beatsticks with self-harming effects and insane statlines that overshadow his old cards, and so forth. Kinda like how they did with Ryo/Zane's character arc in GX. Really like this way of both selling the product in real life and developing thw story in the anime.
