Like the title says. Do you prefer the stories you write(or read) to have open endings or everything wrapped up.

What makes a bad ending for you?

It depends on the story really, sometimes an open ending gives more meaning to the story but other times it doesn't fit the story and a wrapped up ending would be better
What this doctah of the quackening said. Though I feel sometimes authors just drag and drag a story even though it could have ended a long time ago. Looking at you Boruto.

Depends on the story, I don't have a discerning opinion for it.

Bad ending for me it's when you know that there's unanswered questions in the plot the author could've shown the development if a few sentences, but avoided it because whatever. Like, I really wanted to know what happened to that trio of secondary characters that were prominent in the arc and were forgotten. Or simply axed ones, where "our adventure continues!" shown as end in the manga, but in reality author has 10 arcs written in the light novel that has a mildly satisfying ending at the end of it.

Everything's fine if it fits and has left no loose ends. Unless it's a "their adventure has only just begun!" -type of ending. I hate those with a passion... Why tell us there's more if you don't want to deliver?

The best one are the cyclic novels. The ones where the words of the last chapter connect with the ones of the first chapter. Can't beat that.

I prefer things to have an ending most of the time, though open-ended stuff has it's own appeal

Definitely prefer a distinct ending, and ideally, some direct depiction of the impact the protagonists have had on their own lives (or the world, for epic stuff.)

I always liked the conventions some movies and video games did with the "where are they now?" shorts at the end, which can be serious or very funny like in Animal House. Fallout 1/2/New Vegas do it really well for video games.

Depends on the theme.
Examples.

Let’s say the theme is about freedom. Then the open ended ending might be better, since in reality, freedom means working a job, or having to hunt for food (also hard work).

If the theme is about happiness, then you need a happily ever after type ending.

Sometimes the narrative calls for an open ended one like the Matrix’s first movie, other times it calls for a closed ending like Free Guy.
